Top US general taking steps to protect family after Trump death comments

Sept 27 (Reuters) - Outgoing U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley said on Wednesday he would take measures to protect his family after former President Donald Trump suggested he had colluded with China in an act he said would have once warranted death.
Trump last week criticized Milley's handling of the chaotic U.S. withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan in 2020 and said, without providing evidence, that "this guy turned out to be a Woke train wreck who, if the Fake News reporting is correct, was actually dealing with China to give them a heads up on the thinking of the President of the United States."
"This is an act so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH!" Trump said on Sept. 22 on his Truth Social platform. Milley assumed the chairman role in October 2019 during Trump's presidency and is set to step down on Sept. 30.
Asked about the comments during an interview on CBS' 60 Minutes, Milley said in a clip released on Wednesday: "I've been faithful and loyal to the constitution of the United States for 44 and a half years."

I remember several years ago when the "Oath Keepers" were outside the Pentagon accosting us as we were leaving the building and telling us that WE were violating OUR oaths. I didn't think so then, and I certainly don't think so now.

(32,335 posts)consider this, she does not have the resources of general Milley or Mitt Romney to pay for 24/7 security.
Think about that before you criticize her.
Think about the Republican Senators who told Mitt Romney they were afraid to vote to indict Trump.
No one, let me repeat myself, no one has shown more courage taking on Donald Duck than Cassidy Hutchinson. Tish James, Fani Willis, Jack Smith Alvin Bragg all have security provided for them. Fani Willis even bought her prosecutors bullet proof vests.

Michael Cohen leaves Manhattan civil court during lunch break July 7, in Manhattan, New York. (Barry Williams/for New York Daily News)

The damming civil court ruling that Donald Trump had systematically lied on statements of financial condition he supplied to lenders and insurers and will be stripped of his ability to conduct business in New York and exposed to a possible quarter-billion dollar fine could have and should have also carried a criminal penalty, had only someone brought the case. And that criminal case should still be brought. Who will step up?
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg declined to seek an indictment on this valuations case, despite his predecessor Cy Vance laying out the groundwork by prosecutors Mark Pomerantz and Carey Dunne. State Attorney General Tish James, who did a fantastic job on this civil proceeding before Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron, could obtain a criminal referral and pursue prison for Trump.Manhattan United States Attorney Damian Williams could also have a go, as could the IRS. Do it. Justice demands so.
The facts are all there, as Engoron wrote in his 35-page decision: the documents here clearly contain fraudulent valuations that defendants used in business. Trump, as we have long known, lies about everything, even the size of his 10,996 square foot Trump Tower triplex, which he claimed was three times as large at 30,000 square feet, causing Engoron to conclude: A discrepancy of this order of magnitude, by a real estate developer sizing up his own living space of decades, can only be considered fraud. And on and on and on. Liar, liar, liar. Fraud, fraud, fraud. Cheat, cheat, cheat.
The comeuppance for the con man is thanks to his one-time bagman, fixer Michael Cohen. That Trump toady ratted out the Boss and the whole Trump Organization after he was left out in the cold and prosecuted by the feds in 2018 for carrying Trumps water. He pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations related to hush money payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal to cover up Trumps trysts and tax evasion and making false statements to a federally insured bank, as well as lying to Congress. But before Cohen reported to federal prison to start his three-year sentence, he gave testimony to the House Oversight Committee on Feb. 27, 2019, a day after he was disbarred by the New York courts for his felony convictions.

The other 6 include 2 for insurers.
During his many TV appearances, Cohen very openly gave examples of the exaggerations. But it's also possible (although he has been charged in this case too) that whatever Weisselberg testified about in the org's tax fraud trial last year, could be used for this.

And the reference to Elijah Cummings in that Don Lemon interview was regarding his hearing with Cohen that happened 7 months earlier - Feb. 27, 2019 (some Cummings' closing remarks) -
The full hearing on that date is here -

(36,925 posts)Certainly Michael Cohen's efforts to set the record straight now are laudable, but his turn only happened when he had no other choice. Had Trump not thrown him under the bus, he'd still be right next to the orange dipshit doing his bidding. Let's not forget how he said he'd take a bullet for Trump.
Cassidy Hutchinson did the right thing when she did have other choices. I might not agree with her politics, but her ethics are light years ahead of Cohen.
BumRushDaShow
(169,761 posts)He had a "choice" and he "came clean", and also blew open the illusionary facade in what may be the beginning of the end of 45's operation. His "insider" info proved valuable across a number criminal activities.
Not to diminish Hutchinson as her revelations have been game-changer helpful with respect to the teabagger Chief of Staff she worked for and some of the inner workings of the west wing, but she only worked in that capacity for 10 months. Cohen worked in his capacity for over 10 years.
Major Nikon
(36,925 posts)He was breaking the law as a lawyer with the full knowledge his acts were criminal. Anyone who was paying attention already knew the orange dipshit was a phenomenal fraud. Trump particularly sought out lawyers with questionable ethics and Cohen was the epitome of a crooked lawyer. Certainly those who are working to convict Trump have sought him out for info, but I'm not convinced any of it was all that valuable. If it was he wouldn't have served 3 years in prison and house arrest.
Hutchinson was a professional congressional staffer and as far as I've seen her credibility has never been questionable.
BumRushDaShow
(169,761 posts)The whole "inflation of the property values" info from him has been pretty much verified by AG Tish James, with what became a giant wad of "proof". That "proof" was handed to a judge, who very quickly threw up his hands and handed down a summary judgment on the fraud. Regardless of his lies and subterfuge, what he eventually testified to has panned out.
Other than Weisselberg, Cohen was one of the biggest ones to know about what was going on.
What is interesting is how Hope Hicks, who left the administration the first year, but then came back around the same time that Cassidy Hutchinson was brought on, has managed to be out of any spotlight at all.
Major Nikon
(36,925 posts)Trump himself bragged about his ridiculous valuations. Banks and everyone else knew what Trump was doing for decades. That's why no domestic bank in the country would loan him money. Everything was well documented in his bankruptcy filings and loan documents. They didn't need the testimony of a convicted perjurer for any of it. Meanwhile Cohen had very little to do with Trump's real estate ventures. He was the hatchet man who filed frivolous revenge lawsuits against people the orange dipshit didn't like and made payoffs to his mistresses and ex-wives in exchange for NDAs.
BumRushDaShow
(169,761 posts)among others, let alone any of the D.A.'s for Manhattan including Cyrus Vance, Jr, bothered for the past 50 fucking years, to do anything... let alone do so based on some "Well everyone knew about it" reason.
That's not how the courts work.
What seemed to change the ballgame for someone to START to "do something" was a Presidential election, an "affair" with a lady having a stage name of "Stormy Daniels", and a notorious celebrity tabloid.
Once 45 got into office and all hell broke loose, something had to happen.
The payments to Cohen were business fraud extraordinaire - and even potential election fraud based on how the expenses were reported (outside of being a "retainer" ).
Bragg had a trial against the org for criminal tax fraud a year ago where Weisselberg partially cooperated (but was still sentenced to prison for 5 months), so info from that was available.

The testimony that he did back in 2019 for the House Oversight Committee Chaired by Elijah Cummings, provided far more info for all parties involved, for the criminality, because he was part of it.
In terms of "bravery" for someone as young as she was, there is no question. But she was not the only one to drop the dime. There are piles of discarded former-employees like Bolton, Milley and even as mentioned upthread, Omarosa, who people wiped from their minds - https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=3136182

I saw where Cohen said he might not testify. He might not have to. He only spent literally months testifying to NY prosecutors about t****'s criminality.

If such were to go to court, the defense could argue - "Oh... that's just 'hyperbole'", and a jury could be convinced to believe it lock, stock, and barrel.
So as it is, DOJ has had to cobble together a series of such weasel word dog whistles in order to establish the pattern of what amounts to "incitement", to show "intent", and use that to get restrictions.

The Former Presidents Protection Act of 2012, reverses a previous law that limited Secret Service protection for former presidents and their families to 10 years if they served after 1997. Former President George W. Bush and future former presidents will receive Secret Service protection for the rest of their lives. Children of former presidents up to the age of 16 are assured protection under the new law.

But his unusual E.O., like everything else cagey or fraudulent that he did, just adds to the criminality that took place during that administration.

(13,006 posts)...should at least be able to sue him civilly for the costs incurred (hiring security people, relocating, whatever). And only a "preponderance of evidence" is needed for Trump to lose that suit, and juries can award more than merely "reimbursement." Especially when"emotional distress" is added to the equation.

When TFG goes on a rant and tells his disciples to kill the libs it will not take but a minute to cull the herd! I have told my family to change their voter registration and we will not be having election yard signs this year. Its probably too late for us though because our Trump neighbors know who and where we are. In the past we have had election signs burned and shot at in the front yard. The whole thing is disgusting and depressing!

(9,056 posts)of voters by the GQP in Wisconsin has taken many forms. I remember specifically during the Scott Walker recall election my Mom was getting calls because the GQP took the recall petitions and lined up the addresses with phone numbers. You can be sure the GQP didn't toss away that info once the election was over. She started getting all kinds of political mailings and thankfully she didn't have a computer or do e-mail.
