Michael Gambon, actor who played Dumbledore in 'Harry Potter' films, dies at 82

Actor Michael Gambon, known for playing Professor Albus Dumbledore in multiple “Harry Potter” movies has died, his family said in a statement Thursday.

He was 82.

“We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon,” said the statement issued on behalf of his wife, Anne, and son Fergus by publicist Clair Dobbs.

It added that he “died peacefully in hospital,” following a bout of pneumonia with the pair at his bedside.

He did do a great job in what I thought was a thankless role.He was a strong contributor to a truly amazing ensemble cast.

Unfortunately, they only produced 12 episodes.

Sir Richard Harris was 72 when he died, after playing Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films.

Now, Michael Gambon, at the age of 82, who played Dumbledore in the remaining films.

13. Terrific actor RIP

I mostly remember him from some of the BBC costume dramas--Cranford, Wives and Daughters, Emma, Oscar (Wilde), The Heat of the Day and Restless. IIRC, he was one of the original members of the Royal National Theatre with Laurence Olivier. I have a hazy memory of him being in The Cook, the Thief, the Wife and Her Lover with the magnificent Helen Mirren. But maybe I have that wrong. It's been a looooooong time since I saw that, way back during its original cinema run in...early 90s?

Anyway, Sir Michael excelled at every role I saw thrown at him.
