A new monument to Civil Rights activist Viola Liuzzo, a Detroit mother of five who was murdered by the Ku Klux Klan in 1965 near Selma, Ala., and the best friend who helped raise Liuzzo's children after her death, Sarah Evans, was dedicated Thursday by city leaders and community supporters.
Liuzzo, 39, was a student at Wayne State and the wife of Teamsters business agent Anthony Liuzzo. She had traveled to Alabama to help the Southern Christian Leadership Conference led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. with its efforts to register Black voters in Selma. Liuzzo was driving her Oldsmobile on a highway near Selma when a car full of Ku Klux Klan members gave chase and eventually pulled up alongside her car and shot her. Her passenger, Leroy Moton, who was Black, survived the attack.
The new monument was installed at Viola Liuzzo Playground, a Greenfield neighborhood park on Detroit's West side. It honors those who inspired Liuzzo's journey from Detroit to Selma, including Evans, who helped to raise Liuzzo's children after Liuzzo was killed.
