Say goodbye to the COVID-19 vaccination card. The CDC has stopped printing them

It's the end of an era for a once-critical pandemic document: The ubiquitous white COVID-19 vaccination cards are being phased out.
Now that COVID-19 vaccines are not being distributed by the federal government, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stopped printing new cards.
The federal government shipped more than 980 million cards between late 2020, when the first vaccines came out, through May 10, according to the latest available data from the CDC.
Federal and local health officials don't expect the discontinuation of the cards to be a particularly big change, since the days of keeping them tucked in purses and wallets to ensure entry into festivals, bars and restaurants are largely over. If youve held on to your card, its still valid as proof of vaccination. Otherwise, people who need their COVID-19 immunization records will need to request them just like any other vaccine.

(169,736 posts)they started a 2nd card and stapled it to my original. So have a couple more lines to go on it when I get this year's shot.

Ooooooookay. I guess isn't quite "like a flu shot" yet.

(9,062 posts)I will say they have optimized the process a bit and have the forms partially filled out when you arrive. The worst part of the whole process has been the forms and the waiting around. But it's once a year and all expenses are covered so kind of a First World problem.
Whenever I'm at the pharmacy I always wonder what in God's Hell are they doing back there.
BumRushDaShow
(169,736 posts)so it gets transferred to your county's tracking system. And assuming you have insurance covering it, they have that record as well.
The "cards" were mainly for use during the worst parts of the pandemic when many businesses required "proof" of vaccination.

(34,189 posts)Instead I got a raft of prescription receipts for all the vaccinations I got.
I go see my doctor in two weeks for a routine checkup and will ask for my vaccination record from him. Then I'm planning to make a card of all my vaccinations so I have a record for myself. I wasn't sure how long it had been since my previous pneumonia shot when asked.
Plus I am probably due for tetanus, so I may get the TDAP from my doctor (if he has it). A friend of mine just had a baby and I know for certain I never got many of what are now standard childhood vaccinations since they were not available when I was a kid.

(1,856 posts)when I got vaccinated on Saturday. This was put on my 2nd card.
I also let my PCP know whenever I have gotten it and he puts it in my record.
I believe the info is also on my record at the Pharmacy and its reported to NYS Dept. of Health, if I ever need something official.

(7,073 posts)my doctor's office just added the shots to our regular shot booklet.
Now the Corona warn application has been shut down for any new information and QR codes to show you are current. That is how we identified having our jabs up to date.

That whole conspiracy theory is an odd mix of unbelievable optimism about tech combined with unbelievable pessimism about government. I guess they cancel out?

(27,633 posts)The woman giving the shot asked me if I had a card to fill out and I already had it out. She said they aren't required to issue one anymore, but some folks want them just for the record (that's me) or if they're traveling out of country.

(3,782 posts)A surprisingly progressive app for a state with such a poor reputation, it lives on my phone and can serve as my driver's license for most purposes (at least in-state) and also once I opted in automatically gets updated with my vaccination history.

BumRushDaShow
(169,736 posts)my pharmacy gave me a 2nd card and recorded what was my shot #5 on that new card, and then stapled the new card to the old one.
If anything, having it handy helps to jog the memory about when the last shot was given, which is good for those who need to get additional "booster" shots during a year.

(169,736 posts)and now have the 2 cards in there since I needed the new card to get more lines!
Rhiannon12866
(255,525 posts)But she had no idea how many shots there would be, now we know. I hope I can persuade my brother to get the next one as well.
BumRushDaShow
(169,736 posts)although they know that for some people, the effect wanes after about 4/5 months. So the CDC may end up recommending/allowing additional shots for certain vulnerable groups. I think given what you have mentioned about your brother, he would probably be good for a once a year since he is not out in any crowds!
Rhiannon12866
(255,525 posts)But the clinic at the nearby mall isn't there anymore. There's also a CVS in that same mall, but it's also in a Target store so obviously most people there aren't going for vaccinations. But you're right, his only exposure is probably to me - he even gets his prescription by going through a drive-thru.

She wasn't wearing a mask during the procedure. That kinda tainted my view of whatever she had to say about any immunizations.
