WASHINGTON An alleged Jan. 6 participant who online sleuths dubbed "Conan O'Riot" due to his resemblance to legendary former late-night talk show host Conan O'Brien was arrested by the FBI this week.
Derek Nelson, who was an active-duty U.S. Marine from October 2011 to September 2015, was arrested in Champaign, Illinois, on Wednesday, according to federal court records. Along with his co-defendant, Derek Dodder of Nevada, 30-year-old Nelson faces four misdemeanor charges in connection with the U.S. Capitol attack.
Online "Sedition Hunters" dubbed the redheaded Nelson #ConanORiot, using the hashtag to track his movements at the Capitol. The sleuths had identified Nelson more than two years ago, by the summer of 2021.
Nelson was dressed up in colonial attire on Jan. 6, specifically "a brown tricorn hat along with a blue double-breasted button coat and red or maroon undershirt with a white scarf around his neck," according to the FBI. In one video cited by the FBI, filmed near the Washington Monument, where crowds had gathered to watch then-President Donald Trump's speech, a videographer asks Nelson why he's there. "To start a revolution," Nelson said. "Why are you here?

(12,786 posts)He didn't retire from the military and only put in 4 years. Not much of a career.
Maybe his tendency to be a traitor is what made him quit the Marines after only one contract.

(7,215 posts)He's a traitor. He should get nothing.
I'm royally pissed about 1/6. My family fought in the Civil War and against the Nazis. I have zero fucks to give for these assholes.
These traitors went to overthrow our government for the rich, racist, Reich. They should all be in prison for 20 years.

Fucking traitor.
Wonder Why
(7,235 posts)every day for 18 months "When will they arrest me? And how long a sentence will I get?"
What will jail be like?
The wait alone can be excruciating because you can't make long term commitments.
You meet someone you want to marry but you have to tell him/her you may have to be gone for 5 years. What will they do even if they promise to stand by you?
You try telling your friends the "war stories" of what you did but both you and they keep thinking "The sentence may get bigger every time I open my mouth".
You are afraid to tell your boss that, at any time, the feds may come to your job site and take you out in handcuffs in front of all your friends.
You think about what this is going to do to your life savings after legal costs and fines.
Five years with no job so no IRA contributions, no SS payments for future SS payout, tough time getting a job with your record.
You can't enjoy what you have now because you know that at any time the doorbell might ring and you jump when a neighbor stops by in the evening unexpectedly and rings it or the UPS delivery guy makes an early stop at your place.
It is so sad what you have to go through and you haven't even started your sentence. I feel sorry for you. But I'm the only one. Everyone you know and don't know will be saying "Bye STUPID! You're getting everything you deserved. Ha! Ha!" as they make comments about you and your future.
I just love it!

(172,306 posts)Early on, their webpages had all kinds of video clips that had been gathered, and then stills from those which circled individuals they were trying to ID.
Some 2021 threads with mention of them -

There were other threads over the years and they mostly communicated by twitter and used that website to consolidate the info, but then Musk blew twitter up so it's hard to go back and find some of the stuff if you don't have an account (and I don't and never have).
Here's an NPR article on them - https://www.npr.org/2022/01/05/1070471256/amateur-sleuths-help-to-identify-hundreds-of-suspected-jan-6-rioters
I just saw that a reporter from NBC News is about to release a book about them.
