Scalise wins GOP nomination for speaker

Source: Roll Call

Posted October 11, 2023 at 1:07pm

House Republicans selected Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., as the party’s nominee for speaker behind closed doors Wednesday morning — though questions remain if Scalise will be able to secure the 217 votes needed to win the position on the floor.

Scalise defeated House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, paving the way for floor action as early as Wednesday afternoon, lawmakers leaving the GOP conference meeting said. The vote was 113-99, according to Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif.

Scalise would replace the former speaker, Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who was stunningly removed from his role by eight Republicans and all House Democrats after Florida Republican Matt Gaetz filed a motion to vacate the speaker position last week.

It was the second vote in Scalise’s favor Wednesday, after an effort to raise the threshold for the conference to select a speaker was tabled.

I knew they weren't going to choose anybody decent. Just a partisan bigot is all that is viable in the GOP caucus as House leadership.

So, David Duke's clone will be running the house of howler monkeys, various racist, fetus unalivers even though MANY of those reich-winged males in the Congress/Senate want to outlaw all abortions (except for their mistress et al), sexual assaulters, a George Santos, A Boebert/Greene--ladies of the evening, traitors, election deniers--and now it's leader, "I'm David Duke without the baggage" being the #1 election denier 👀

I read elsewhere that Scalise doesn’t have full support of the caucus. I’m not holding out hope but they could screw this up and Jeffries could win it.

It’s not 218-it’s a majority of the votes cast.

Glad to see the Republicans sorting out their business so they can get back to the business of the people.

Blue skies and smooth sailing from here on. I'm sure of it. Jim Jordan is known for being a good sport and a graceful loser.

And I know the Republicans want to put this drama behind them so they can better serve the country. They hate chaos.

How do you make that sarcasm thingy again?

Jordan is also working to convince his colleagues who voted for him to join him in supporting Scalise as Republicans try to avoid another messy floor fight, a source with direct knowledge told CNN. Jordan plans to vote for Scalise on the floor and is encouraging his colleagues to do the same, the source said.

But it’s not yet clear if that will be enough to secure the needed votes.

https://edition.cnn.com/2023/10/11/politics/house-republicans-speaker-election/index.html

It’s unclear how long the recess might last. Scalise narrowly won his party’s nomination earlier Wednesday in a race that also included Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio). The delay in a vote by the full House signals that Scalise is still working to win support of Jordan backers. Becoming speaker requires a majority vote in the full, narrowly divided House. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) will back Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) for House speaker and has offered to give a nominating speech on Scalise’s behalf, according to a spokesperson for Jordan.

Again, given that Scalise's primary opponent has endorsed his candidacy, Scalise should be Speaker by now, God help our poor Republic.
