A new program in St. Louis will give $500 a month to low-income families for 18 months, an effort to help prevent the root causes of crime, city officials said. The citys Mayor Tishaura Jones announced Tuesday that the funds will go to hundreds of households across the city, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
St. Louis guaranteed basic income will give hundreds of St. Louis families the resources they need to lift themselves out of poverty, giving them a strong foundation to grow and to thrive, Jones said during a news conference. A website is already available for those interested and will begin taking applications later this month. The city plans to start doling out the money in December through debit cards.
About 540 St. Louis households are expected to receive the benefits, with the money going to parents or guardians of children enrolled at city public schools. Those eligible include families making 170% of the federal poverty line or less, which comes to roughly $42,000 for a family of three.
The program, launched after Andrew Yang popularized universal basic income during his failed 2020 presidential campaign, was approved last year by St. Louis Board of Aldermen.

The Board of Aldermen approved the program last year. The city will use $5 million in federal pandemic aid. Meanwhile, St. Louis native Jack Dorsey, who co-founded Twitter and Square, is contributing $1 million.

And good morning! CPI day!

(26,257 posts)the RAMS left town suddenly w/ literally no warning (the owner wanted to go to LA). The city sued him for broken promises, got $700 million in damages (again, I'm guessing).
There are other things that they could do w/ the money too, so I hope that all of this isn't spent on this one thing. Don't get me wrong, previous studies of those receiving cash payments (when they are below certain levels of income) have done good.
We'll see...

(12,801 posts)...but as this expands, and it will expand, I think it will the payments will move up to higher earners. I don't know what that level is necessarily, but I 100% think a UBI will be means based.

(96,882 posts)These are always small pilots for a few months. Nobody has shown a way to scale it up to "universal" national coverage. Consider that none of the social Democratic nations people admire have tried anything like this.
