CANBERRA, Australia (AP) Australians voted in a referendum Saturday against enshrining in the nations constitution a mechanism for Indigenous people to advise Parliament on policies that affect their lives.
Proponents said creating an Indigenous Voice via the constitution would recognize the special place that Indigenous people have in Australian history while giving them input in government policies.
Opponents argued it would divide Australians along racial lines without reducing Indigenous disadvantages.
Bipartisan support regarded as essential in Australia for successfully changing the constitution never emerged, and Indigenous leaders were divided on the idea.

(8,123 posts)Wife and I voted 'YES' and thought the outcome would pretty much be a no brainer.
Couple possible reasons:
1. Fear campaign by the NO people - basically saying . . . you don't really know what this implies, so don't risk it.
2. The YES side didn't outline real/potential positive outcomes.
3. Australia has a Constitution? Really? How does it start?
'We the people . . .' Ummm, no, that isn't it!
Oh yeah . . . 'WHEREAS the people . . . ', but as an Australian, I'm embarrassed to have to admit I had to Google that.
Seriously though, it would made little difference to the average (white) Australian either way, so why not vote YES?
Well, see 1 above.

(20,931 posts)I was honestly baffled by the opposition to the Voice by some indigenous leaders. Apparently the cities were mainly Yes but it was lost in regional votes.
