Kenneth Chesebro rejected plea offer ahead of Georgia election interference trial: Sources

One of former President Donald Trump's co-defendants in the Georgia election interference case rejected a plea deal from prosecutors ahead of his trial this month, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.
Attorney Kenneth Chesebro, one of the 18 defendants charged alongside Trump in Fulton County case racketeering case, rejected an offer from prosecutors, the sources said.
The deal would have allowed Chesebro to avoid prison time by pleading guilty to one felony count of racketeering, the top charge in the indictment, according to the sources. He would have had to agree to testify against his codefendants -- including Trump -- in exchange for three years' probation and a $10,000 fine.
The terms of the deal also included a written letter of apology, the sources said. The deal would have been made under Georgia's first-offender act, under which the conviction would have been wiped from Chesebro's record after probation was completed.

(170,866 posts)There were apparently multiple defendants (those involved in the fake electors) who were offered "limited immunity". I expect that will be in exchange for pleas (at least 8 per the link) - https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/05/politics/georgia-trump-fake-electors-immunity/index.html
(remember there are a pile of "un-indicted con-conspirators" that are out there - around 30 at last count)

(19,573 posts)But maybe that's a desired quality in a defense attorney doing an interview.
The argument they were making in the interview was basically "he's a law nerd with a niche interest in election law who was just writing papers about what was possible, it isn't criminal to write legal briefs/summaries."
Meanwhile apparently there is footage of him marching with Alex Jones's gang in DC on Jan 6th. Asshole!

(8,103 posts)Three years probation, expungement after completion, $10,000 fine with a letter of apology, all in exchange for testifying against co-conspirators?? Does that take his bar card?
Jail is NOT somewhere you want to go. He was offered to never spend a day in jail for his crime? His attorneys aren't going to do the time. This is where you take him on a tour of a jail, like scared straight. Only, make it a real prison.
I think he's counting on the same offer being available later. Time's running out.
