Jim Jordan's effort to empower interim Speaker Patrick McHenry collapses

WASHINGTON An effort backed by Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, to empower interim speaker Patrick McHenry of North Carolina collapsed Thursday after it became clear it wouldn't get enough support from House Republicans.
Jordan, the GOPs latest nominee for speaker who lost two rounds of votes this week, had floated the idea of temporarily empowering McHenry while he worked to shore up enough support for his own candidacy, according to three sources. The plan would have empowered McHenry until January, the sources said, allowing legislative business to continue in the face of two wars and a looming government shutdown.
But leaving a lengthy closed-door meeting with GOP members on Thursday, Jordan said that empowering McHenry was not a viable option. He said it was a way to lower the temperature and get back to work but we decided that wasnt where were gonna go. Jordan reiterated that he was not planning to drop out of the race.
"Im still running for speaker and I plan to go to the floor and get the votes and win this race," Jordan said. He reporters that he planned to try for a third round of votes later Thursday.

(196,390 posts)Three Democratic lawmakers told NBC News that during a closed-door meeting Thursday, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York told rank-and-file members that Democrats would only support a temporary speaker who meets the following conditions: They voted to certify the 2020 election; have a track record of standing up to extremism and defending democracy, as well as a track record of governing; and agreed to support the original debt limit deal struck between the White House and McCarthy.

(203 posts)1. Nominate someone that meets the requirements Leader Jeffries outlined above.
2. Tell their R colleagues that one (1) of the moderates will be voting for Jeffries in the next vote to show they are serious about taking control back from the MAGAts. And it will two (2) on the next vote, and then three (3) on the next, and then four (4) on the next, until either the moderate R wins, or Jeffries wins.
This will give the at least 4 rounds to convince the rest of the caucus to get in line, or Jeffries will be the speaker.
I know... It will never happen.

If anything, a "distraction" is needed because of what Sidney Powell did today.

(169,374 posts)She was the "lack of brains" behind all the CT they were spewing. I heard a news blip on the radio this afternoon saying something about her getting "6 months probation" (among some other hand-slap things). So she must be really spilling beans and then pouring out some other stuff to get a get outta jail free card.

(8,103 posts)12 months for every count, which is six counts, plus $6,000 fine, plus $245 (or so) costs to the court, plus an apology letter, plus having to testify against her fellow conspirators. All in all a good trade off against 5 to 20 years in prison.
