JUST IN: Rep. Mike Johnson voted new House speaker

Source: CNN

House Republicans have elected Rep. Mike Johnson as the new speaker – a major moment that comes three weeks after Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster.

There were 220 votes for Johnson and 209 votes for Democrat Hakeem Jeffries. There was unanimous GOP support behind Johnson. One Republican – Van Orden – was absent from the vote.

Johnson has been a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and was a key congressional figure in the failed efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Johnson was first elected to the House in 2016 and serves as vice chairman of the House Republican Conference, as well as GOP deputy whip, an assistant leadership role.

An attorney with a focus on constitutional law, Johnson joined a group of House Republicans in voting to sustain the objection to electoral votes on January 6, 2021. During Trump’s first impeachment trial in January 2020, Johnson, along with a group of other GOP lawmakers, served a largely ceremonial role in Trump’s Senate impeachment team.

Republican Mike Johnson elected US House speaker, ending leadership vacuum

By David Morgan and Moira Warburton
October 25, 20231:56 PM EDTUpdated 5 min ago

WASHINGTON, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives elected Republican Mike Johnson, a conservative with little leadership experience, as its speaker on Wednesday after a turbulent three weeks that left the rudderless chamber unable to respond to the Middle East crisis or carry out any of its basic duties.

The 220 to 209 vote elevated third-term congressman Johnson, 51, to a speaker's chair that has been vacant since Kevin McCarthy was ousted on Oct. 3 by a small group of hardline Republicans angry about a deal with Democrats that averted a partial government shutdown.

In the weeks that followed, Republicans who narrowly control the House considered and rejected three possible replacements before settling on Johnson, a Louisiana lawyer backed by former President Donald Trump who spent years advancing conservative policies like school prayer.

First elected in 2016, Johnson will be the least experienced House speaker in decades. He is best known as the author of an unsuccessful appeal by 126 House Republicans after the 2020 presidential election to get the Supreme Court to overturn election results in states that Trump had lost. Johnson declined to answer a question about that effort shortly after his nomination on Tuesday night, while other Republicans booed and heckled the reporter who asked it.

U.S. Aid to Ukraine Far Exceeds That From Other Countries
Of the aide flowing into Ukraine
US supplies 47%
EU 39%
Other countries 14%

So…tell me Ukraine has its military aide cut by 47% how are they going to continue? You don’t think pootie will sweep in and end this conflict in their favor?? Seriously??

You call the fact that a country fighting for its very survival as a nation of ppl has its military aide cut by 47% a conspiracy theory.

Note that Hamas’ training materials show a massive escalation in training/preparation in the past couple years. At a time when the US has been very active in Ukraine.

I would argue that it was NOT in Hamas’ interest to attack Israel, and I would wonder if there weren’t some help from Russia or Wagner. It would really distract America’s attention to the Middle East. The new Speaker of the House, a Trump ally will not likely be in favor of aid to Ukraine. He did not even mention the subject today, even though the press is reporting that Ukraine will retake Crimea in the next few weeks.

most of the country, but an election denier who voted against certifying the 2020 presidential election,
and was 'the central figure in the House' for STEALING the 2020 election, according to the MSM articles I have read,

voted against funding the country for the short-term stopgap measure,
opposes AID for Ukraine, wants a total ban on abortion,
is a 'Christian nationalist' and supports EVERY FAR-RIGHT proposition
to take freedom away from our people and suppress every minority....

YEAH. GREAT CHOICE FOR SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE,
from the GQP perspective....

.... and probably just as well for the Democrats!

RIP OFF THE MASK!!!! Totally... if they want to shut the country down,
and they probably will, for a time....

Let the entire country see, AND FEEL, the results of "Republican Leadership" !!!!

Let the Republican House PASS EVERY FANTASY FAR-RIGHT BILL in their imagination---
It will result in nothing except to inform the entire country what they actually stand for.....

Thank God we have a Democratic Senate and a Democratic President!
but that won't stop them from making their "legislative statements"!

(how many times did another GOP house vote to 'repeal Obamacare' ?? 12? 13?
they wasted a lot of time there, but that is what they do...)

I suppose they will 'move forward' with their Biden impeachment with no evidence---

I recall the results of the election after their Clinton impeachment--
(when they actually had 'some kind of case', which the American people ultimately rejected,
and gave the Democrats gains in the congressional election afterwards...)

Let them bring it. The clown show, with the bogus impeachment, with their fascist imperitives and anti-woman measures, are CERTAIN to deliver the House of Representaives BACK to the control of the Democrats in 2024!
