US halts exports of most civilian firearms for 90 days

Source: Reuters

October 27, 2023 9:26 PM EDT

WASHINGTON, Oct 27 (Reuters) - The U.S. has stopped issuing export licenses for most civilian firearms and ammunition for 90 days for all non-governmental users, the Commerce Department said on Friday, citing national security and foreign policy interests.

The Commerce Department did not provide further details for the pause, which also includes shotguns and optical sights, but said an urgent review will assess the "risk of firearms being diverted to entities or activities that promote regional instability, violate human rights, or fuel criminal activities." The Commerce Department declined to comment beyond the posting on its website.

The halt covers most of the guns and ammunition that could be purchased in a U.S. gun store, said Johanna Reeves, a lawyer who specializes in export controls and firearms with the law firm Reeves & Dola in Washington. Reeves said she had not seen the Commerce Department take such a sweeping action like this before. "For sure they have individual country policies – but nothing like this," she said.

Export licences for Ukraine and Israel, as well as some other close allies, will be exempted from the temporary halt in exports.U.S. companies that sell firearms, including Sturm Ruger & Co. (RGR.N), Smith & Wesson Brands (SWBI.O) and Vista Outdoor (VSTO.N), could be impacted by the export ban.

There wouldn't be much of a "crisis" at the border!

...and it is illegal to bring them into Mexico, so they already smuggle the weapons in, where from is probably not a big issue to the Cartels

14. The crisis at the border has a large climate component

Refugees from El Salvador and Guatemala are abandoning their subsistence farms because the rains don't fall reliably anymore.

And the largest contingent now is from Venezuela, which is an economic crisis issue.

Guns are a part of the issue, but not all of it.

Talk "regional instability" to that town in Maine, used for a human target range by that psycho. Really shitty timing for this.

with the Export ban. If they have to sell, sell out their existing inventory. Period. Isn't that enough to kill everyone in the U.S. multiple times over already? (sigh)

Republican senators raise 'significant concerns' on US firearms export pause

Thu, November 16, 2023 at 6:43 PM EST·2 min read

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A group of 46 Republican U.S. senators asked the Commerce Department on Thursday to answer questions about its Oct. 27 decision to temporarily stop issuing export licenses for most civilian firearms and ammunition for non-governmental users.

The letter signed by Senators Ted Budd, Mitch McConnell, John Thune and others said they had "significant concerns about the justifications for and ramifications of this pause" and said it "puts at stake U.S. commercial and economic interests" as well as U.S. national security and foreign policy.

The Commerce Department's 90-day pause has some exemptions including export licenses for Ukraine and Israel, as well as some other close allies.

"We are concerned the unmet demand created by this action will promote opportunities for less scrupulous, professional, or conscientious sources of supply to fill the void, thereby strengthening illicit arms markets," the senators wrote.
