(10,804 posts)I feel for the father, but why was a 14 year old out on the streets are 3am.?
Far be it for me to question a dead 14 year old's where abouts, but it was the first question that popped into my mind.
Lots of kids/teens are out and about at all kinds of unusual hours for lots of reasons.

(10,804 posts)A 14 year old (freshman) has no business being out at 3am. unless they're with a parent or a parent trusted adult.
At 14, if I came home after 10pm. my a$$ was grass.
I was allowed to attend HS football & basketball games which usually started at 7pm and end around 8:30-9pm. Then allowed to get a bite to eat with friends afterwards. Homecoming dances allowed for a little leeway but nowhere near 3am.
And I certainly didn't let my 14 year old daughter out after 10pm. without permission and not without knowing where she's going.

(7,952 posts)It's a historic district with a street full of clubs and attractions; back in my day there was an actual "vampire" themed emo club, a gay club, several other various music venues and lots of sit down bars and restaurants. This area was surrounded by parking lots and I seem to remember residential streets when you got far enough away. Likely for Halloween there were some outdoor things going on. I know there was at least one haunted house that used to operate there as well.
Back then the clubs closed at around 2 am on weekends, so the locations would disgorge all their patrons kind of at the same time and it became a massive outdoor crowd meeting up, strolling around if it wasn't hot, waiting for rides home or walking back to various parking lots. It's like the exodus from a theme park.
People always dressed for the vampire bar, and I imagine this was basically Halloween weekend for every club. I wonder if the kids either were allowed to be up on a Saturday night or sneaked out to see everyone wearing costumes.

(18,842 posts)THEIR family, they are at fault. Maybe the kid sneaked out of the house. Maybe the kid was doing drugs. Maybe the kid was with older siblings or family members. Maybe the kid wanted to have fun on Halloween night. Who knows. None of business or anyone elses.
The kid is dead because of Phucking guns. Not because he was out at 3 am.

(11,237 posts)According to the article. The kids dad might have been there, since he was interviewed in the article. Ybor City is a historic district within a neighborhood. It's not off on its own, away from a community; it is in the center of the community. It's a historic district because it was the early center of Cuban culture in Tampa, so there are homes and neighborhoods just a block offf the main streets. They have events for the community. It is also a place that has nightclubs and bars.
I prefer not to blame and shame someone for being a victim of gun violence.

(18,842 posts)Love your explanation and can picture the setting based on your description. Should have been a fun night with community and family.
Turned tragic again because of our love affair with guns.

(12,583 posts)Having been multiple times it is definitely not kid friendly at night, think more drunk rowdy New Orleans Mardi Gras at 3am with costumes thrown in and 21 and over crowd. The kid friendly stuff is all daytime.
(really a unoffical Quavaween these days at the city stopped sponsoring it due to losing money somehow on a event where 120,000 people would go.)

(18,842 posts)and dont need to know. Self-righteous pontificating on whether or not the kid was out, was it appropriate, and was he up to no good HAS NO BEARING on what happened here.
Hes dead. Because of phucking guns AGAIN.

(33,424 posts)That is why society has curfew laws for people under 18. Forgot about those or did you just want to ignore it? A 14 year old has no reason to be out at that hour at a party.

(18,842 posts)See post #13. Excellent description of the type of gathering and why a 14 year old would be there at that hour.

(33,424 posts)They don't know anything about it and was just speculating based on the reading of an article which doesn't have any specific information. No thanks and it is our business. Ever heard the phrase "It takes a village to raise a child"? Maybe you are opposed to that also.

(22,590 posts)Sure. There's another phrase this reminds me of, though: "blaming the victim," or in this case, blaming the victim's parents. Not cool either way.

I agree about the kid being out at 3am. Strange to have a kid out at that time.
