Throngs gather for March for Israel rally at D.C.'s National Mall to condemn antisemitism

WASHINGTON — Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered at the National Mall on Tuesday for a rally in support of Israel and against the antisemitism and bias incidents that have erupted in the U.S. since the start of the Gaza war.

The March for Israel rally came as the war between Israel and Hamas entered its sixth week and with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continuing to reject calls for a cease-fire.

“This is the moment to speak up for ourselves and be united in support of Israel,” said 21-year-old Indiana University student Jared Cohen.

The death toll in Gaza continued to climb and Palestinians trapped there by the fighting faced a dire humanitarian crisis, many hiding in packed hospitals that were struggling to treat patients while fuel, food and power remained in short supply. The latest convulsion of violence in the Holy Land erupted Oct. 7 when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking some 240 hostages.

'March for Israel' rally to condemn rising antisemitism at D.C.'s National Mall

Nov. 14, 2023, 6:30 AM EST / Updated Nov. 14, 2023, 9:03 AM EST

WASHINGTON — Tens of thousands of demonstrators are expected to gather Tuesday afternoon on the National Mall in a forceful show of support for Israel and to condemn antisemitism in the wake of increased bias incidents across the U.S.

A "March for Israel" in Washington, D.C., comes as the war between Israel and Hamas enters its sixth week, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejecting calls for a cease-fire but suggesting Sunday there might be a possible deal to release hostages Hamas took from Israel last month. Palestinians also face a humanitarian crisis while they evacuate from Gaza amid heavy fighting as the death toll climbs, hospitals crumble and resources like fuel, food and power remain scarce.

Organizers of Tuesday's event said they not only are calling for the return of the hostages, about 240 people, but also want to underscore "Israel's right to remain free from violence and the right of Jewish communities in North America and around the world to live free from hate."

"There's no place for such an ancient form of hate," said Gil Preuss, the CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, a chapter of the Jewish Federations of North America, an event organizer.

Thanks to the Nazis running the GQP.

I can't believe a draft dodger who called people who died for their country losers and suckers, is running to lead the country. Our lazy media should just call the Republican party what they really are - the Nazi party.

But it is a defining feature of Nazis.

And now a defining feature of Republicons.

To claim Dems are on the same footing as GOPers echoing the hateful reteric of Nazis and their leaders is wrong.

is to ponder the antisemite's political or ideological affiliations. When your life is at stake, this is the last thing on your mind. You don't care as much about who is attacking you as you do about you being attacked.

Antisemites like to hide behind the "But I am not a nazi" shield. Not being a nazi doesn't automatically absolve you of antisemitism. This is not hard to grasp, is it?

I fail to see why you would repeatedly return to the nazi corner of antisemitism and refuse to acknowledge other sources, and why all of a sudden you would represent my argument as defense of the "poor abused nazis". Building a Strawman, perchance? Why?

It's just everyone else's that upset you.

If not for people like Nazis, who promote antisemitism as a defining feature of their hate filled ideology, antisemitism would not have advance and spread as it has.

They have made it acceptable. Nazis have clearly promoted it. Trump and the GQP have supported Nazi ideology throughout the country. Nazis are the life blood, the stream head, of antisemitism and you seem fine with that.

Not all antisemetics are Nazis but all Nazis are antisemetic and they are intricately tied to the Republicon party in the US.

Ignore them at your peril. The Nazis didn't attack all the Jewish people in Germany all at once before WWII. It was gradual and required a lot of people to turn a blind eye to their stated, obvious antisemitism.

I specifically said that ALL sources of antisemitism, no matter what they are, upset me. Is this unclear? Why?

You seem to only acknowledge right wing nazis as the source of antisemitism. You are looking at a room full of stinking piles of shit and pretending that only one of them stinks up the room. I am telling you no, all of them do, and you get defensive warning me that I am ignoring the single pile of shit of your choice at my peril.

What???

Who is ignoring antisemitism here and at whose peril?

But....ok....

A more apt simile would be that we are looking at a room full of crap and I point out the cow in the corner that's taking a dump all over the room. And you say don't worry about him, look at all the crap.

OK, this has gotten very weird. I'm just not going to respond anymore.

...he is pointing out ALL the types of shit, whereas you, as demonstrated in your remark, are only looking at the cow and ITS shit, completely ignoring the horse, the dog, the cat, and the other animals ALSO shitting all over the place.

To be put simply, it is important to recognize not all shit (anti-Semitism) is being produced by the cow (Nazis), and it is more prudent to recognize ALL SHIT (anti-Semitism) as problematic and to be avoided.
