ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) One of Rob Manfreds first trips after his election as baseball commissioner nine years ago was to Oakland to consult with Athletics owner John Fisher on attempts to keep the team in the Bay Area.
Unable together to make that work, the As will instead move to Las Vegas and become only the second Major League Baseball team in more than a half-century to shift cities.
All 30 MLB team owners gave their approval Thursday to Fishers relocation plan, which was endorsed by Manfred.
There was an effort over more than a decade to find a stadium solution in Oakland. It was John Fishers preference. It was my preference, Manfred said at a news conference. This is a terrible day for fans in Oakland. I understand that and thats why weve always had a policy of doing everything humanly possible to avoid a relocation, and truly believe we did that in this case. I think its beyond debate that the status quo in Oakland was untenable.

Nice move by the owners to throw in a provision that owner John Fisher would be taxed heavily if he turns around and sells the team for an immediate profit. Serves him right.
And the A's have been a major league joke for so long. This "move" won't improve things any. But this is a sad day for Oakland fans.

(10,609 posts)Was hardly anyone there, even with the bash brothers. There was a giveaway that day with a poster of them, wish I would have kept that. I believe Billy Martin was their manager.

(10,915 posts)Maybe each seat has a slot machine so you can gamble and watch the game at the same time.
I'm sure the A's (or whatever they'll call themselves) would get a cut.
MLB would approve it if they get a cut as well.
Do I need to add the sarcasm thingee?
