NEW YORK (AP) The U.S. flu season is underway, with at least seven states reporting high levels of illnesses and cases rising in other parts of the country, health officials say.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted new flu data on Friday, showing very high activity last week in Louisiana, and high activity in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, New Mexico and South Carolina. It was also high in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, the U.S. territory where health officials declared an influenza epidemic earlier this month.
Were off to the races, said Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University infectious diseases expert Traditionally, the winter flu season ramps up in December or January. But it took off in October last year, and is making a November entrance this year.
Flu activity was moderate but rising in New York City, Arkansas, California, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. And while flu activity has been high in Alaska for weeks, the state did not report data last week, so it wasnt part of the latest count.

(10,101 posts)Covid in left arm, flu shot (the 65+ version) in right arm. So far so good, not even sore arms. The one year I didnt get around to the flu shot (2017) I got it and was deathly sick for a week and coughing for over a month.

(2,950 posts)I was asked if I would prefer both shots in one arm, or to put one in each. I hadn't heard of this, but ended up going with one in each arm. Covid left, Flu right.
So let me ask you this... did you notice any difference in the The Covid shot, which to me was just a little pin prick, vs. the Flu shot, which to me was noticably more than that? Because I thought the Flu shot was more intense than the Covid I asked the nurse if the needle was larger, or inserted more deeply, and she said both are the same size. So when I mentioned that the one on the right felt more intense than the other, she said most people have the same reaction, i.e. the dominant side felt more pain, but she wasn't sure why.

(14,685 posts)I do NOT want to deal with the flu or RSV now.
Unfortunately, I live in a red state where a lot people believe that vaccination is a conspiracy between George Soros, the grey aliens, and Satan.

(17,703 posts)finding Covid vax at first. Twice had an appointment at cvs and both times cancelled-seems my local cvs wants to concentrate on flu shots this time of year. Then finally got Covid vax at local grocery store pharmacy.
The cvs I go to had shingles, pneumonia and flu vax, just no Covid shots. This particular cvs is not open weekends any longer. They simply cannot find enough people to work there. Used to go to a locally owned pharmacy. They had one pharmacist and occasionally a sub, but it got to where I would go in and they couldnt give me my prescription because the pharmacist wasnt in yet at 11:00 am in the morning! Guess he couldnt afford the sub the last year or two they were open. Quit going to them and within a year they were closed. This was several years before Covid.

(3,128 posts)I didn't get all the flu shots because for 2 days, I've felt like I swallowed some glass down my throat.
Every cough is a big deal.
As with everybody, I've had some form of Flu, but this one is a Bad Boy.
I hope none of you catch this nasty thing...

not happy with all the coughing.
Ice cream does help a lot. I'll tell my husband to get more ice cream and also chocolate cake.
You Did say ice cream and lots of chocolate cake..Right?

(169,397 posts)but back in Feb., WHO recommended having "2022 (H1N1)pdm09" as one of the components and per the 2nd graph in the OP, that seems to be the predominate type-A virus in circulation among several others.

(20,878 posts)October 5th....RSV and Flu Shot in each arm. NO soreness or side effects.
Nov.8th...COVID vaccine. No side effects or soreness.
I have been getting annual Flu shots since the Fall/Winter of 2014/2015. So far, so good. I have not been seriously sick with the Flu since January of 2014.
The 2 times I had COVID, a walk in the park. Nothing more than sniffles.

Havent had covid, afaik, either and Ive had all 7 shots. Also had RSV vax earlier this fall and pneumonia shot (my second) last May.
I do not want to get any of respiratory illnesses because they all suck.
Ive also masked religiously for the last 3 1/2 years. I think it is the best protection one can use to avoid getting sick from any of these diseases, after vaccination.

It's not enough. Especially during the holidays!

(1,855 posts)We meet friends outdoors for dining, cards, etc. We do a lot of entertaining on our decks/patios. Even now that its colder we will have friends over for drinks and apps around the fire pit.
We go to the theatre frequently (3000 person one) and H and I mask, plus the theatre put in a whole new ventilation filtration system when they were closed during first year of the pandemic. Last night we went to friends and we wore our masks until we got in the hot tub.
We mask when any workers have to come to the house. I even play tennis, indoors, twice a week for ams hour and a half masked.
Our social life does take a bit of a hit in the winter, but I have a group of girlfriends I walk with everyday, regardless of the weather.
I go to the salon for every six weeks and every three weeks for a mani/pedi. I just wear my mask.
Ive flown several times to visit my mother and my H an I have taken several vacations since the pandemic (all to warm weather locations.) We were also at the USOpen, Mets and Yankees games, etc.
The only thing I will not do is eat indoors at a restaurant.
Tbh, I have always been a bit of a hermit in the cold months, which is why we got the theatre subscription so we would be forced to go out in the winter.
Of course I cant mask all the time..Im in the process of having a dental implant so lots of time in dentist chair and checkup appointments. Of course, the dentist and assistants are all masked.
I dont even care other places I go if no one is masked. Most of the time I am the only one wearing one. I believe it protects me as much as possible. What anyone else does (except my husband) is no concern to me anymore.

(22,905 posts)the COVID19 that killed millions around the world, which includes the USA. Right now, the symptoms are what you may equate to the modern cold and flu at this point in time.
That's what I've have read. But alas Covid shots do keep the variant somewhat contained, we hope.
I don't want to go through the years of shithole whose administration, comrades and family made profits off of the suffering and deaths of COVID 19.

(28,493 posts)but I never get a flu shot. I'm 75 years old, last had flu sometime in the mid-1970s.
I got influenza any number of times in my youth, including the Asian flu in 1957. Essentially, I've had enough variations of flu that I'm pretty much immune to any of them.
Individual immune systems vary wildly. That's one of the things we're seeing with Covid. It's not quite as obvious with flu, but pay attention. Some get it, and get very sick. Some get it and die. Some get it and recover easily.
What's not clear at this point is who gets what, or why. In my personal case I think that the fact I got sick A LOT in my early childhood, is a factor. Plus, I'm of the generation that got all the so-called childhood diseases: measles, mumps, chicken pox, rubella. I'm glad we now have vaccines for all of them. I got all of them, survived, which boosted my immune system, and perhaps that's why I'm so phenomenally healthy today. Why I don't get sick.
Oh, and as for the common cold, here's this: there are about 200 rhino-viruses that cause the common cold. Once you've had one and recovered, you're now permanently immune to that specific virus. Which is why older people almost never get colds. They've essentially had them all. I've had maybe two in the past 15 years. All of you young folks can look forward to a future with fewer colds.

(6,115 posts)Correlation does not equal causation and this needs more study, but people who regularly get flu, COVID RSV, etc. immunizations statistically have a lower incidence of dementia.
Now if that isn't a reason to protect yourself - among all the other reasons (like not passing on viruses to others and making them sick) - I don't know what is.
Feel good about getting your shots. You are protecting yourself from more than just the flu. And what's more, you are protecting those you love.
