(51,284 posts)as COVID programs have ended but they have a strain on their resources from immigration and other humanitarian issues. NYC has had to cut important services because of reduced local tax revenue.
I wouldn't underestimate the influence this has over many young and minority voters.

(54,449 posts)At the 60th annual Grammy Awards, host James Corden had more than a surprise Carpool Karaoke segment in store. Highlighting the Best Spoken Word Album award, Corden introduced a pre-recorded clip: a series of celebrities brought on to narrate Michael Wolffs insiders account of the Donald Trump administration, Fire and Fury.
John Legend, Snoop Dogg, Cher and DJ Khaled all attempted dramatic readings of excerpts of the contentious bestseller.
And then there was Cardi B, queen of one-liners. Why am I even reading this st? the Bodak Yellow rapper asked in disbelief. I cant believe this. I cant believe this is how he really lives his life?
But there was one more surprise in store: former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, adding her own reading to the mix. Her narration roused the audience to applause. That might have just been the biggest cheer of the night, Corden noted after the clip finished.

(8,186 posts)does happen to be one of the main complicated questions of the day. New York is cutting services in order to cover migrant costs, and mayors of cities like NY, Chicago, Denver, etc. are, in fact, looking to the federal government for assistance. The argument of the governors sending migrants to these cities is that the federal government is not doing enough to formulate and execute a policy.
Ultimately, saying "money for Ukraine when we are having library hours cut" is, as you suggest, a bit simplistic, but it's not entirely "stupid." Guns or butter was a traditional left anti-war slogan. The complexity of the in-between steps was always assumed. I don't think she's entirely wrong to say "Wait a second, why is my own community under-funded when we have billions for these faraway wars?" That was always a traditional left argument. We do poorly to let right wing populists hijack it.

(42,034 posts)Posting a rant about not voting for President Biden because of local budget cuts made by the mayor of NYC is immature and demonstrates a total lack of critical thinking skills

(19,406 posts)It doesn't matter how much one hates it, the reality is that we have a de facto binary choice. You get A or you get B.
A or B. That's it.
So if you reject A, you are choosing B. Period.
Maybe she thinks she's rich or famous enough to escape the consequences of B that the masses will be crushed by. She should not count on that, if history is any guide. She's already in the arena, whether she will want to be or not in the future given a bad election outcome.

(8,186 posts)You have to offer something positive. This is the trap Trump is setting: he's trying to get Democrats to cathect on to a negative argument for the election. You can goof on Cardi B all you want, but you have to win those votes with something positive, not fear of the other guy.

(19,406 posts)I'm speaking to Cardio B's dumb-assed reasoning -- or anyone else who doesn't like Biden for a reason that would be turned up beyond 11 by TFG.
If you are going to pout and sit out because you don't get what you want, you are going to get much fucking worse than the thing you weren't satisfied with enough to support.
That's the reality. Losing what you care about even worse to prove a point is a stupid and childish way to behave or speak.
Prairie Gates
(8,186 posts)"You're stuck with us, dumbass," doesn't strike me as an empathetic or rhetorically savvy (or mature!) response to that.

(19,406 posts)system that selects our office holders in a realism-based manner. I don't see what the difficulty is in seeing the difference.
This is the system. These are the (very unsatisfying) choices.
If she needs people to pander to her feelings or concerns then whoever wants her votes should certainly try to do that (like, say, Biden).
But if she wants to look out for what she purports to care about through her own behavior, then affirmatively choosing the less bad de facto binary choice is the way to do that, not going 3rd party or abstaining. Doing either of those latter options is self-harming by increasing the likelihood that the more bad de facto binary choice wins.

(58,285 posts)So she has the luxury to make a protest vote. It won't hurt her and she can tout her political purity. But she is screwing the people she claims to be championing, of course. It's the ultimate display of clueless privilege.
Sadly, her millions of fans (folks who DO have everything to lose) will follow her lead, and that will hurt them and all of us.

(6,331 posts)Like no reproductive freedom? Fascism? Healthcare? An endless litany of issues will fall on "her community". The problem is you don't resolve issues by issuing mandates that will ultimately be destructive. Have a problem? Work on a solution. The fact is she won't feel the effect like "her community". It's Susan Sarandon all over again.

(54,449 posts)It is one of the most difficult things for me to deal with here, as I am probably 40 or so years younger (I just turned 27, so no young tweenie myself) than the average DUer, and ofttimes even the most basic of current cultural references are met with self-claimed ignorance of the subject, and/or even at times open ridicule, diminishment, and hostility.
Cardi B is one of the biggest pop/rap stars on the planet, with billions of streams, has won many awards (Grammy, etc), and was named one of the 100 most influential people globally by Time in 2018.

(957 posts)Clearly she takes her ignorant, SUPERTACKY UBER sexualised "rap" as actual talent. Her papa is Dominicano and her Mama is an AfroLatino Trini. What the hell does she think her family is? She has STRONG self hatred, basing this on the things she's said about other black people, (Apparently. she doesn't believe that she's considered to be of African descent) and has OPENLY andwith impunity used N****r in reference to other black people, (let's not even begin to talk about the extensive plastic surgery to narrow her nose, which is okay to do BUT when it paired with her obvious dislike of non-Eurocentric facial features....yeah). Having such a Dominican Papa, it should surprise me that she's got issues with other black people. SMDH. She's tried to excuse HORRIFIC homophobic comments when called out on them. Look, let me shut up because I'm getting periously close to typing what I REALLY think of her as a fellow black woman.
Somehow, I don't think she's going to be missed too much.
