'More emboldened by the day': Trump's holiday attack on court clerk sparks horror

Donald Trump posted a Thanksgiving greeting that immediately devolved into a tirade against court and law enforcement officials he claims are targeting him for political reasons.
The former president offered a holiday message reminiscent of his infamous Nov. 27, 2013, tweet wishing a "Happy Thanksgiving to all -- even the haters and losers!" but this year's greeting ran on at length in an attack on New York attorney general Letitia James, New York Supreme Court justice Arthur Engoron and his clerk, and President Joe Biden.
"Happy Thanksgiving to ALL, including the Racist & Incompetent Attorney General of New York State, Letitia 'Peekaboo' James, who has let Murder & Violent Crime FLOURISH, & Businesses FLEE; the Radical Left Trump Hating Judge, a 'Psycho,' Arthur Engoron, who Criminally Defrauded the State of New York, & ME, by purposely Valuing my Assets at a 'tiny' Fraction of what they are really worth in order to convict me of Fraud before even a Trial, or seeing any PROOF, & used his Politically Biased & Corrupt Campaign Finance Violator, Chief Clerk Alison Greenfield, to sit by his side on the 'Bench' & tell him what to do; & Crooked Joe Biden, who has WEAPONIZED his Department of Injustice against his Political Opponent, & allowed our Country to go to HELL; & all of the other Radical Left Lunatics, Communists, Fascists, Marxists, Democrats, & RINOS, who are seriously looking to DESTROY OUR COUNTRY," the ex-president posted. "Have no fear, however, we will WIN the Presidential Election of 2024, & MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!"
The message puzzled many social media users, who pointed to the post as yet another example of why Trump is unfit to serve again as president.

(6,678 posts)given that his deranged posts scream "lunatic", what gets me is that his followers read this garbage and think the country would be better off if he gets back into the presidency. Geez, they really are in a cult.

(5,122 posts)Here's what Rajneesh cult members did up in Oregon (from Wikipedia):
"In 1984, 751 people suffered food poisoning in The Dalles, Oregon, United States, due to the deliberate contamination of salad bars at ten local restaurants with Salmonella. A group of prominent followers of Rajneesh (later known as Osho) led by Ma Anand Sheela had hoped to incapacitate the voting population of the city so that their own candidates would win the 1984 Wasco County elections.[2] The incident was the first and is still the single largest bioterrorist attack in U.S. history.[3][4]"
So trump knows full well that he "could shoot someone on 5th Ave" and his cult followers would be just fine with it.

(53,214 posts)I've sincerely tried to see and hear what they're seeing and hearing, but I just don't get it. When I first started noticing Trump (before he went into politics), I thought what a total clown. It was hard to believe such a person was actually real and not some caricature from a movie. Even harder to believe was that reputable journalists took the time to interview him.
Meanwhile, the more outrageous his behavior and words, the more his base seems to love him. I feel like I'm living in some parallel universe.
CTyankee
(68,197 posts)of the blue. Some decent republicans rejected him immediately; others took a long, long time (too long) and then repudiated him (probably due more to his increasingly aberrant and repulsive attacks and now resulting in an out and out madman. Few knew his depths of malice, even insanity, and now are horrified. One of them was Joe Scarborough and Mika B. who had him on call in interviews to their show. The final blow was Kellyanne Conway coming on Morning Joe with her "alternative facts." That was it! Mika barred her from ever being on the show again. I remember watching this unfold, as a regular viewer of that show...

(53,214 posts)could have caused so much damage in such a short period of time. In my mind, it would have been a far smarter and more strategic man. Perhaps the problem was we were focusing too much on the candidate and not on an electorate who apparently were ready for a bombastic, authoritarian leader. I was amazed at how many Trump voters had voted for Obama. Mindboggling.
"Few knew his depths of malice, even insanity" - I seriously did not know how truly evil he was. I expected incompetence and showboating, but not the cruelty and meanness we witnessed. His compulsive need for revenge is absolutely terrifying.
I'm not sure I'll ever be able to absorb all of this. So much of it is beyond comprehension.
CTyankee
(68,197 posts)off so many of his former supporters that he can never be president again. The man is a downright threat not only to our own country but to the world. It scares the hell out of me. I'm scared that his voters are so far gone mentally that they will take the rest of us with them when a nuclear holocaust results.
I am trying hard not to be an alarmist but I'm old and more scared than I used to be when I dealt with stuff better. I hope that younger leaders have plans in place to deal with Trump's increasingly unstable mind...I trust that they are alarmed, too, and have plans in place to prevent his using power to do bad things.
PatSeg
(53,214 posts)I might have been able to handle all of this better when I was younger, but my knowledge of history and authoritarian government are the stuff of nightmares for me. I have trouble just watching movies or reading books about Nazis or any kind of dictatorship. I get filled with such anxiety and dread. I can envision being in such a scenario and now it feels much too possible.
We have every right to be alarmist. What I find the most disturbing is how little resistance there is to this monster. I had no idea that so many seemingly patriotic people would compromise their beliefs and values, especially for someone like Trump. So many Republican politicians are willing to throw everything they care about out the window, because Trump might tweet something negative about them and they could lose an election. Like that would be the end of the world. No, Trump with unlimited power would be the end of the world.
Sometimes it feels like we are so powerless.
CTyankee
(68,197 posts)government was going to collapse with crazy people running around the halls of Congress searching for Nancy Pelosi and ready to kill her! She fled to safety, thank god, but can you imagine the terror she felt, that if these monsters found her they would have KILLED her. And that people like my neighbor who is kind and usually sane was rooting for the insurrectionists that day. Good people who turned into a frenzied mob, ready to kill anybody interfering with their monstrous plan.
I had to have a tooth extracted that day and lay in the dentist's chair weeping while he did what he had to do. I remember his dental assistant patting my hand to reassure me and that helped calm me down. He gave me painkillers and I went home and took them and eventually was OK. Panic is a horrible thing. while you are dealing with it.

(53,214 posts)It took place in Germany in the 1930s and it described the anxiety and fear experienced by sane, rational people as they watched the madness grow around them. When Trump moved into the White House, I watched these crazed MAGA crowds and I felt that I could relate to the fears of those people in Germany.
More recently I read Erik Larson's In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin and it felt like history was repeating itself. I recognized the "Brown Shirt" thugs in many of the Trump supporters. If his followers had a better understanding of history, they would know what happens to people like them.

(68,197 posts)their house being discovered and you hear the soldiers on their way up the stairs and the family members look at each other and it ends there. It was stunning. The diary stops there and the stage play ends with the lights just suddenly going off. It was terrifying.
The night I saw it, it left the audience stunned in disbelief because it happened so suddenly. We weren't prepared for the emotional blow that came.
PatSeg
(53,214 posts)when I was in 8th grade and that probably started my fear and dread of fascist regimes. After that I saw the movie. I could feel their terror knowing that it over and there was nothing they could do. It is truly insane what human beings do to one another.

(4,741 posts)Maybe if you weren't paying attention, but to everyone else, he had made his hateful views well-known, for decades.
Did you miss how he and his father were fined for discriminating against black people in having access to their rental properties back in the 70s?
Were you not paying attention when he took out that full page ad calling for execution of the Central Park Five--and has made a career of refusing to back down from that stance, even after they were fully exonerated? That he's actually justified the stance by saying that even if they squirmed free of that crime, then they deserved execution for committing other crimes--for which there is zero evidence?
Were you not paying attention to the multiple complaints about how brown people were treated at his casinos, and even how he had black *employees* removed from the floor when he had to walk through, because he wanted to see only an all-white casino?
Or when he was accused of discriminating against multiple brown pageant contestants?
Did you miss all of those years of birther nonsense?
He's been evil a long time--right in the open.
