Jury to decide how much Rudy Giuliani must pay election workers he defamed

Source: NBC News

WASHINGTON — Opening statements began Monday in a trial to determine how much Rudy Giuliani will have to pay two former Georgia election workers after he was found liable of defaming them with baseless claims that they committed fraud in the 2020 election.

Freeman and Moss received an “overwhelming” amount of “vile, racist, hateful comments” that were “fueled” by Giuliani and his co-conspirators, one of their attorneys, Michael Gottlieb, told jurors.

Giuliani attorney Joseph Sibley told jurors there's no question that Freeman and Moss were harmed and that they're "good people," but he added that the “punishment must match the crime.” He said Giuliani never promoted racism or violence, and that the millions of dollars Freeman and Moss are seeking would be the “civil equivalent of the death penalty.”

“It would be the end of Mr. Giuliani,” Sibley added.

I don't care if it "ruins him"...he chose to commit slander and fraud (find raising off the slander).

Time to FAFO into the find out stage

Too bad we don't have workhouses and paupers prison for these asshats like Ghouliani, Alex Jones. Etc.

he did not retract it immediately and in fact he kept pushing it so now needs to pay the piper.

I hope these women hammer him for what he did. No question.
I wish they would collect every dime.

But with Dominion and Smartmatic lawsuits along with his own lawyer suing him for millions (and other lawsuits), there is not going to be much left. Pennies on the dollar with Dominion and Smartmatic probably getting the lions share.

That is my fear.

Hopefully, Rudy grovelling for financial mercy will be some consolation for them (if they don't choke on their vomit having to watch it).

The Georgia election workers are getting their case handled first. They'll be first in line to get what money he has. The others will get their paydays in the order they get their ruling. If they get a ruling. We know the Georgia workers are getting something; now it's about how much. Smartmatic, Dominion and Ghoulie's lawyers haven't gotten a decision yet, one way or another. So it's useless to worry about what they'll get before anything's decided.

Then, he files for bankruptcy protection ...

That allows other plaintiffs with claims (outstanding cases) to also submit their claims to the bankruptcy court to get relief from the automatic stay - which the defendant will probably object to - to drag it out some more.
etc.

I think it is more likely that they will get pennies on the judgement dollar in a few years from now. Giuliani might be dead and they have to settle with his estate.

Their best hope might be that a number of plaintiffs drop out when they see how little they're going to get because it isn't worth the legal fees and the years it will take to collect. Maybe their lawyers will suggest taking a low ball settlement to make sure they get some cash - to at least get their legal fees covered.

Rudy has probably been spending like the drunk that he is, knowing he's going to lose it anyway.
He can't even keep up with his alimony payments. These folks are after $40 million?

I'm very pessimistic. The horror is probably not entirely over for these poor women. They're going to get a moral victory with a big dollar figure likely bookended by a breathtaking discount on the damages they'll eventually receive years from now.

Somewhere along the way, Rudy will double down because you can't get blood from a stone. He has nothing more to lose financially.

It will probably be a big, backslapping joke at the Republican country clubs. And so will Rudy.

Yeah. That was pretty much the intent Giuliani had when he smeared those women. He wanted to destroy them and nearly succeeded. The end of Giuliani would be a fitting punishment.
