Federal judge says research can't be used to link acetaminophen to autism, ADHD

The 440 lawsuits brought against the makers of Tylenol and generic acetaminophen do not have "admissible evidence" to show that prenatal exposure to the medication can lead to autism or ADHD, a federal judge ruled this week.
U.S. District Judge Denise Cote wrote in her opinion that at least one of the experts provided by the plaintiffs "cherry-picked and misrepresented study results and refused to acknowledge the role of genetics in the etiology of either ASD or ADHD."
The ruling is largely consistent with the position of major medical bodies, which say the evidence is not sufficient to make a cause-and-effect link between the use of acetaminophen during pregnancy and issues like autism and ADHD in children.
While there has been some evidence to suggest that acetaminophen use during pregnancy may be linked with neurobehavioral issues, a definitive cause-and-effect has not been established. The risk may be greater with higher doses and more frequent use of the drug, studies note.

(4,741 posts)Bizarre claim, she's old enough to remember when paracetamol (what she knew as Tylenol) was *not* available at all, then when people couldn't get it without a prescription. And yet there were kids even back then who were known to be autistic and hyperactive--aka ADD/ADHD.
So both conditions pre-exist Tyenol, meaning that it's unlikely to be a major cause of either one. Could paracetamol exacerbate underlying causes for one or the other? Maybe. But it will take a bunch of science to find any connection, if one exists, something these brain dead fools are incapable of.

(9,531 posts)We see this all over health sciences.
People STILL promote the now-debunked "link" between saturated fats and heart disease.

(26,637 posts)Without scientific basis - just a hypothesis - it's inflammation which is a factor in development of Autism or ADHD. Would explain the NSAID link - as people who have inflammation tend to also take an NSAID to help relieve it. Also inflammation would help explain the correlation with older parental age and Autism as older people tend to suffer more inflammation issues.
Similarly, inflammation is linked with many types of heart disease. I would not also be surprised if there is not an association between NSAIDs and heart disease.

(21,196 posts)pregnant women can take, wouldn't there be A LOT more cases of autism and ADHD if Tylenol was the cause?

(47,245 posts)I still remember when a few psychologists blamed "frozen mothers" (mothers who were "cold" to their babies,) for autism.
Autism is a mental illness, period.
