Ohio governor vetoes transgender sports, gender-affirming care ban

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has vetoed Ohio House Bill 68, which is comprised of two acts: the "Save Adolescents from Experimentation Act," which would ban transgender minors from receiving gender-affirming medical care, and the "Save Women's Sports Act," which would prevent transgender girls from taking part in girls' and women's sports.

"I truly believe that we can address a number of goals in House Bill 68 by administrative rules that will have likely a better chance of surviving judicial review and being adopted," DeWine said at a Friday press conference.

He announced that he agreed with several concerns from the legislature and will draft rules for gender-affirming care moving forward -- including bans on surgeries for minors, reporting and data collection on those who receive care, as well as restrictions on "pop-up clinics" that serve the transgender community.

At least 20 states have implemented restrictions on access to gender-affirming care, many of which have faced legal challenges. A law in Arkansas was ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge and several laws have been blocked while the cases are tried. Ohio's bill could still go into effect if 60% of the state legislature votes to override the governor’s veto.

to wait till age 18 tp have hormonal or surgical gender treatments. I would not discourage their choice to be who they are, and by the time they are 18, they will have matured physically and emotionally to make that choice permanent If family and friends are supportive throughout the years before he/she makes the physical commitment, I think the wait would not be as dramatic.

But that’s my child. I wouldn’t feel comfortable telling other parents how to deal with this.

Kids usually know who and what they are well before 18. Would you tell a young gay kid that they can't be gay until they're 18? I hope not, because I knew I was gay at a very young age. And waiting to come out til I was 19 was terrible. Wish I could have done it sooner, but I was too scared. That screwed me up for many years as an adult.

Similarly, the problem with waiting til 18 for trans youth is that then transitioning becomes even more difficult. Surgery can wait til then, but hormone treatments are reversible for younger patients. There is also a serious risk of suicide among trans youth who aren't permitted to just even socially transition. Not trouncing you, just food for thought.

I live in a gay community with many gay friends and all the guys have mentioned at one time or another that they knew they were gay from an early age. My lesbian friends had varied stories. Two of them were married with children before eventually starting relationships with their now female spouses. Either way, all had acceptance issues with family and friends which in some cases ended sadly.

I’m a retired nurse and I now work at the high school with wonderful , beautiful, naughty, healthy children. Some of the teachers grumble about how loud and unruly kids are these days, and I tell them that after caring for sick children, I prefer to see them loud and unruly… and very healthy. Anyway, over the years I have known a few trans teens at the school. And again, the biologically born males who are in the process of becoming the females they were meant to be are fully committed, physically and emotionally. The female I knew who was in the process changed her mind several times. She truly was having a very difficult time and it was my understanding that her mother was not at all on board.

In either case, I would still wish for my child (in my case, grandchild) to reach full maturity before having surgery, or at least 18. And puberty comes with such a set of super powered hormones as it is; I’m nervous thinking about adding even more to the mix. But even more importantly, to fully accept them for who they are at any age.

He can bend to reality which was why he was sensible during covid and is fighting the lege over recreational weed. Plus he has the genial grandad thing going and being "government knows better than parents" goes against his grain.
I don't like him, but I can give him that much credit
