'It's embarrassing': Republicans worry they have no achievements to run on in 2024

Source: NBC News

Jan. 22, 2024, 7:00 AM EST

WASHINGTON — When Congress began the new year, Rep. Andy Biggs gave a television interview and made a startling confession: House Republicans have done nothing they can run on.

“We have nothing. In my opinion, we have nothing to go out there and campaign on,” the Arizona Republican said on the conservative network Newsmax. “It’s embarrassing.”

Anchor Chris Salcedo responded with a bemused chuckle. “I know,” he said. “The Republican Party in the Congress majority has zero accomplishments.”

The exchange captured a dynamic that looms over Republican lawmakers heading into the 2024 election: They’ve passed little substantive legislation since winning the majority in 2022 and struggled to do the basics of governing with a Democratic-led Senate. Their first year was instead marked by fractiousness and chaos, complicating the party’s pitch to voters this fall. The challenge is accentuated by likely GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump making “retribution” against his enemies, rather than shared policy goals, the centerpiece of his comeback bid as he continues to spread fabricated claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

Me neither.

Biden is kicking ass on the economy as Dems generally do. Inflation is coming down. So they just have the border and 2 conflicts in Ukraine and Israel.

Like on Jan 6 where nobody had any political agenda, typical tourist behavior, etc.

There was significantly less tear gas and pepper spray in my city during Biden and Obama's presidencies.

...looks like several GOP Senators are close to passing a huge bill on immigration. This is a real accomplishment that the GOP could brag about come election season, but they seem to care more about denying Biden a "win" than actual solving a problem. Yeah, I know, duh!

So the GOP House won't pass anything unless there is a GOP president? What kind of fucked-up politics is that?

so the government doesn't shut down, rather than instead trying to impeach Joe Biden, Hunter Biden (who isn't even in elected office anywhere), and Alejandro Mayorkas, and also keep finding ways to censure Democrats who call them out.

"Legislative markups" are alien to them.

All they do is use their Committee meetings is prance around, pontificate, and rail against Democrats instead of looking at the needs of the federal government agencies under their purview so those agencies can do the jobs that the various laws demand that they carry out.

Scumbags will steal anything, do anything illegal to claim their so-called superiority over the democratic agenda that's been so successful by Pres. Biden and his fellow democratic legislators. Some of these democratic legislators have been kicking republican a&& in their speeches and comments in the Senate and/or House, and it's been a pleasure to watch, while the republican's mouths drop open in frustration.

They need a leader but one hasn't stepped up, tRUMP is so concerned w/ his own demise, his own a&&, and doesn't care about anybody else in the republican conference. No surprise, since it is all about donnie boy 100% of the time. Me, me, me!!!

Scumbag and spoiled brat tRUMP needs to go sit in the timeout corner for a long time.

That’s just a Republican thinking like a Democrat.

The Republican base couldn’t give a sheet about accomplishments, they just want to make their political opponents suffer. They also don’t need, in their view, a majority in order to rule. They just need a big enough mob to overwhelm those of us not willing to figuratively AND literally fight for a free and fair democracy.

I suspect this congressman may not be long in his role. The entire GOP strategy is to rile up a base not to be more numerous, but to be more overwhelming than a majority who stands against them. In that view accomplishments me an nothing unless it is the cynical stomping of a liberals feelings. That’s all they care about, that’s all they stand for. And they want to subjugate everyone else who is not one of them.
