His commentary on Trump and the GOP in the run-up to the election will be a sight to behold, of that I'm sure.

In the run up to the 2016 election both Stewart and Letterman gave up their tv gigs - when we needed them most. They knew what a clown Trump was and they both bowed out. Now.. Everybody has to make their own decision on whether to continue doing something as a profession. I do not know why both ran for the hills. I just know that these popular media superstars were important conduits for public messaging. Many people were worried about Hillary's foreign policy - but that looked like small taters compared to all the crazy stuff Trump did. I heard my dumb ass brother echo those talking points. As if there was no difference between Trump and Clinton. Did Stewart not see the threat Trump was?

My loony conspiracy theory is that Trump and his Russian goons dug up embarrassing dirt on them and nudged them toward the door. Stewart abandoning the fight was especially sad. I think of all the rally's he had in previous years for GOTV. The work he did for 911 responders and veterans is admirable, but that kinda seems like low hanging fruit. I would hope that Stewart would target big issues that affect us all - like voting rights, citizens united or rowe v. wade. Jon was definitely looking for more popular causes and less controversial issues. A good example of someone who doesn't look for the easy fight is John freakn Oliver. He will take on anybody.

Did Jon jump in because of the Trump threat or is he doing it because he lost his Apple gig? Regardless, it is good to have him in the trenches.

Jon Stewart's work on the Daily Show was an incredible salve for us during the rough Bush years. But he doesn't owe us anything. He has the right to make career decisions based on his own needs and interests, just like the rest of us.
