States Had Nearly 65,000 Rape Pregnancies After Abortion Bans: Study

Source: daily beast

‘DEVASTATING’

Over 90 percent of those pregnancies occurred in states that don’t have rape exceptions, researchers found.
Dan Ladden-Hall Updated Jan. 25, 2024 8:01AM EST

Following the Supreme Court decision to strike down the federal right to an abortion, tens of thousands of pregnancies from rapes are estimated to have occurred in states that subsequently introduced abortion bans, according to a study.

Research from published in JAMA Internal Medicine on Wednesday used national data on sexual violence to calculate that about 520,000 rapes led to 64,565 pregnancies between July 2022 and Jan. 1, 2024, in the 14 states that introduced near-total abortion bans after Roe v. Wade was overturned.

Of those rape-related pregnancies, over 90 percent were estimated to have occurred in states without rape exceptions. The study, led by the medical director of Planned Parenthood of Montana, also cited separate research that found that 10 or fewer legal abortions have taken place per month in states with the strictest bans, suggesting that rape survivors are unable to seek safe abortions in the states where they live and are instead either forced to travel long distances for abortion access or to carry their pregnancies to term.

“Restricting abortion access to survivors of rape can have particularly devastating consequences,” the academic journal’s editor’s wrote in a note about the new study. “Whether these survivors of rape had illegal abortions, received medication abortion through the mail, traveled to other states, or carried the child to birth is unknown.”

One forced birth is one too many

I have 3 emergency contraception kits (My Way) that I bought to send if anyone needs them. Just send me an email to make arrangements.

I am willing to be your aunt, if you want or need to come visit. I'm in Ohio, which should help

are surprisingly affordable. Four-year shelf-life to the meds. No reason not to have that in an at-home first-aid kit.

about OTC birth control. When I ordered these, I kept checking information on the different products. The kits I have expire 6/25.

Thanks for your positive opinion about the product

The fact that they mostly occurred on red states says a lot about the way women are treated by conservatives.

We should also teach men to keep their peckers in their pants when they're not wanted !!!!!

HOLY SHIT !!! 520,000 Rapes in those 14 states in18 months? Are you kidding?

I wonder how this compares with non-red states.

I did check out the paper on the JAMA website, and it seems to be legit.

Democrats are the conservationists of our natural resources, our freedoms and our citizens.

Republicans are fascists seeking to intimidate, incarcerate, and exterminate any that oppose their unbridled Nat-C depravity.

Republicans are fascists.

There are no fascists that conserve, therefore there are no conservative fascists, therefore there are no conservative Republicans.

Meanwhile, keep on keeping all those Viagra prescriptions filled. I know, I know, it's apples and oranges but the hypocrisy pisses me off.

The number of rapes in 2022 was about 470,000. So, going up to 520,000 (10%) could mean that it's reported more.
