Trump says he's interviewing new lawyers for Carroll case appeal, attacks judge

Source: The Hill

01/31/24 10:29 AM ET

Former President Trump suggested late Tuesday night he may be shopping for new lawyers to represent him in an imminent appeal of the damages verdict in the case brought against him by writer E. Jean Carroll.

A New York City jury last week ordered Trump to pay Carroll $83.3 million for defaming her in 2019, when he denied the longtime advice columnist’s accusation that he sexually assaulted her decades earlier.

Trump said Tuesday he is “in the process” of interviewing several law firms to represent him in his appeal. “Any lawyer who takes a TRUMP CASE is either ‘CRAZY,’ or a TRUE AMERICAN PATRIOT,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I will make my decision soon!”

The former president was represented in the initial trial by attorney Alina Habba, a New Jersey-based lawyer who also represented Trump and his company during his New York civil fraud trial that ended earlier this month. It’s not uncommon to seek different representation when handling an appeal, and the post doesn’t make clear that Habba was removed from the case or Trump’s broader legal team. The Hill requested comment from representatives for Habba and Trump.

Only criminal.

So he has to find some error in law, but habba dabba do didn't raise any during trial.

So good luck on anything beyond trying to reduce verdict, which seems soundly decided.

Or so lawyers with ny civil experience say. I don't know jack.

Btw Lawyer Habba’s job was to make a fine meal out of a shit sandwich. She could
have been Perry Mason, Joyce Vance, and Thurgood Marshal but Trump was guilty
of what E.J.C. said he did and so his goose was cooked no matter who or whom was
his lawyer.

Whether stinky puts up his own cash or someone else's, the court will only take cash, and it will have to include a year's worth of interest.

He can try to borrow it, or get a secured bond, but that is a lot of money and he is known for fraud and not paying debts.

Oh, and a good lawyer could have kept the damages much, much lower. By keeping him out of court and quiet (if possible), the jury may have come in much lower.

He must put up the entire amount on bond, before he files an appeal. But the judge made sure to run a tight case, so he has nothing to base an appeal upon. He will lose, and forfeit his bond.

their law licenses, a great opportunity to 'defend the indefensible' while enjoying the aromas of the accused. All those who apply will also be asked to participate in a fund-raiser to help the accused with his legal expenses which he will never pay. Don't wait too long, huge line of lawyers already applying for the job openings."

Morning Joe had fun laughing at Habba

https://www.rawstory.com/alina-habba-trump-2667132581/
MSNBC's Joe Scarborough could hardly keep a straight face discussing attorney Alina Habba's work for Donald Trump in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case.

The former president suggested Tuesday night on Truth Social that he might be shopping for a new legal team to appeal his $83.3 million penalty, and "Morning Joe" panelist burst into laughter the news.

"Wonder why," Scarborough said, as his guests laughed......

"No, I mean, she's very angry," Scarborough continued. "At one point in the proceedings, and I've got to say as a lawyer, I've never seen this myself, so maybe she had a reason to be upset. You know, they took away her coloring books. There was a color-by-number thing on how to be a lawyer when you grow up, and she had -- the judge took them away.",....

"No, he's had bad lawyers," Scarborough added, "but at least they knew their way around the courtroom, and by the way, you either know your way around the courtroom or you don't, and speaking as a lawyer that didn't know his way around the courtroom, I can tell you, it can be a very frightening thing and you would not want to be in this type of case."

Trump tried to tell her what to do. And she was too green to handle a problem client. She was hip deep before she realized what a mess she was in, but she had to put up a defense in a case where no defense was needed, just an attempt to minimize the judgement. And it was Don's antics that drove the final amount way up.

Appellate work is distinct from trials. They aren't the same thing, and thus if one can, they seek the services of someone who specializes in appeals.
