SALEM, Ore. (AP) The Oregon Supreme Court said Thursday that 10 Republican state senators who staged a record-long walkout last year to stall bills on abortion, transgender health care and gun rights cannot run for reelection.
The decision upholds the secretary of states decision to disqualify the senators from the ballot under a voter-approved measure aimed at stopping such boycotts. Measure 113, passed by voters in 2022, amended the state constitution to bar lawmakers from reelection if they have more than 10 unexcused absences.
Last years boycott lasted six weeks the longest in state history and paralyzed the legislative session, stalling hundreds of bills.
Five lawmakers sued over the secretary of states decision Sens. Tim Knopp, Daniel Bonham, Suzanne Weber, Dennis Linthicum and Lynn Findley. They were among the 10 GOP senators who racked up more than 10 absences.

(10,412 posts)Not governing is all they have besides taking away women's rights. So the next batch is likely to walk out too. What their constituents do afterwards will be interesting.

(14,868 posts)All but three counties in Oregon voted for the bill to block them from running if they walk out again. after multiple walk outs which "benefitted" the red county agenda by blocking democratic majorities from legislating.
Which is to say even the republican counties want the people they pay to represent them.. to show up and represent them.
If the next batch do the same, worst case, we've lost nothing and are in the same situation we were before. But i find that even the people who are furthest into the idea that they are being disenfranchised because their political opposites get more votes.. really strongly identify with the idea that we are paying legislators to do a job, and none of us can just decide not to show up to our jobs.. so why can they? If Republicans make themselves the party of not doing their job.. I think its possible you could see some of those red districts elect purple, green, or even blue representation.

(14,868 posts)Which is saying something given it was argued on partizan lines. It easily beat out any presidential candidate to ever run in Oregon. The only one that even came close was Teddy, and he was still less popular with voters by a whole percent.

(9,289 posts)It is a Salem tradition as reliable as cherry blossoms on the Capitol Mall. Each year as the legislative session begins, a number of lawmakers arrive at the statehouse with family members in tow.
For the weeks or months that follow, these wives, husbands, daughters and sons will serve as aides to their duly-elected loved one, earning taxpayer-provided salaries.
Oregons state Capitol, in other words, runs partly on nepotism and always has.
While Oregon public officials from mayors to drainage district commissioners are strictly limited in hiring and supervising family members, lawmakers carved out an exception for themselves when crafting an anti-nepotism law 16 years ago. They reasoned that the practice of hiring family was simply part of the fabric of Oregons part-time citizen legislature.

It's infuriating that the anti-government Republicans love to have their family members suck at the government t**t.

Sure wish we could replace Chavez-Ravine in my district. I dont like having a Republican representing me in Congress - or anywhere else, for that matter.
Ive never had a GOPer for a Rep - as far as I can remember, at least since I started keeping track.

While she resisted to kooks for a while, she relented to install MIke Johnson.
I look forward to her defeat at the hands of Janelle Bynum!
