Supreme Court seems skeptical of kicking Trump off election ballot during landmark hearing

Source: Yahoo! News

The United States Supreme Court on Thursday heard arguments in a landmark case that will decide whether former President Donald Trump is ineligible to run for a second term in office because of his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, which culminated in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Throughout the hearing, however, both liberal and conservative justices seemed highly skeptical of the decision by the Colorado Supreme Court to remove Trump from state ballots based on its reading of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which bars those who have taken an oath of office and later "engaged in insurrection" from holding office gain.

Trump appealed the Colorado ruling to the Supreme Court, arguing that Section 3 doesn't apply to presidents and that Congress, not the states or courts, is the only body that can remove candidates from ballots.

Like several conservative justices, liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson pressed plaintiffs' lawyer Jason Murray on whether Section 3 applied to presidents.

Right?

If Thomas had an ounce - an OUNCE - of decency, he would recuse himself.

We all see what is happening and it’s truly disgusting and shameful.

If he isn't ruled ineligible for the ballot, could it still be argued he cannot assume and "hold" the office even if elected per the wording of the amendment?

A known insurrectionist themselves, probably more than one. They keep Clarance around despite all hi, and his wife's, crimes. This clearly indicates they don't really care about the rule of law. It's all about the destruction of democracy for them.

After it has been shown he broke the law over and over again and got his wife to act as his stand-in insurrection coordinator, Roberts still keeps the criminal on to judge others. Imagine being judged by a criminal when you are not, how galling. Of course the stinking Nazi is a criminal himself so he's good with it.

The court is more interested in protecting their favorite wannabe dick-tatter and stinky Nazi.

Since even the "liberal" justices seemed quite sympathetic to the case. Everyone seemed more interested in parsing language and twisting it out of shape than they did the reality of keeping an insurrectionist off the ballot.

It was so depressing to listen to.

It will probably take some time before the opinion is released. But (unlike most oral arguments) we could get a pretty good sense of the eventual result - which could be unanimously against the CO supreme court

...so Biden can beat the crap out of him again! By an even wider margin than before.

While I believe the Constitution is clear and Traitor Trump should have been barred from officeholding, it may be for the best to keep him on the ballot and just beat the hell out of him. The upcoming trials are going to stick him with some convictions and more and more Republicans will peel away from the orange cancer.

FDR currently owns the largest margin of victory of any US President at 60.3%. That's a big hill to climb, but I think Biden can beat that record, and wouldn't that be a coup de grâce?
