A judge has officially registered the judgment in E. Jean Carroll's defamation award against former President Donald Trumpstarting the clock on Trump's attempts to lower the $83.3 million awarded.
Judge Lewis Kaplan entered the judgment on Thursday, February 8, which gives Trump 30 days to post a bond pending post-trial motions to have the award lowered.
A jury decided in January that Trump should pay Carroll $83.3 million for claiming she was lying when she said Trump sexually assaulted her in the mid-1990s.
Kaplan's order is "for compensatory damages ( other than for the reputation repair program) in the amount of $7,300,000.00; Plaintiff E. Jean Carroll has judgment for compensatory damages (for the reputation repair program only) in the amount of $11,000,000.00; and Plaintiff E. Jean Carroll has judgment for punitive damages in the amount of $65,0

(17,802 posts)He hasn't directly defamed her since the award was made. Only a few lame retweets.
This bond is gonna hurt. He's gonna have to put it up himself. No bank is going to loan him $60-$70 million. And an individual or foreign loan is going to invite scrutiny.
And then there is the fraud verdict on its way.

(6,129 posts)Or is it a typical 10% bond, or something like that?
He's only got $8 million or so left in the RNC coffers. If the bond is bigger than that, he'll have to sell more 'virtual' trading cards.

(541 posts)Trump can be that person, or he can (maybe) find someone who's willing to vouch that amount if Trump puts up a significant fraction. Otherwise, Carroll can start proceedings to collect on the judgement as soon as the time runs out. But who wants to vouch for a man already adjudged of persistent fraud?

(10,909 posts)No one is going to guarantee $83.3 mil to the court with Trump just putting up 10% of the money.
If he loses the appeal which is probably in the order of about 90+% chance he will, the court has to have those funds guaranteed and in place to proceed with the appeal so that when the appeal gets decided, there are no issues sorting out the money.
Trump has to work out some way for the bond people to get guaranteed that they get paid.
That is a problem for two reasons:
1. Trump is likely already leveraged and other financing he has is counting on % of assets he owns to insure they get repaid
2. Judge Engoron is about to hit him with what looks like $100s of millions more in damages which would give bonds people the jitters
Putin or the Saudis might wind up owning him.

(6,115 posts)I was wrong. I figured there'd be no way to shut him up.
Just wait until Engoron comes with his judgment. The felony factory is gonna have to liquidate to pay this shit. No one's going to loan him money to pay this.

(9,056 posts)is different than the 15 days to file an appeal? Maybe a legal beagle here could explain if the 15 started the day of the guilty verdict or is it the day the judgement is entered? If I understand this 30 days that is a period for post trial motions to the trial court only.
Does the 15 days wait in abeyance until post trial motions are decided?
