Patti Davis, daughter of former President Ronald Reagan, said he doesnt think her father would be embraced by todays Republican Party ― and that the feeling would be mutual.
I dont think he would... and I dont see how he would want to be in it, she told CNNs Jim Acosta on Sunday. Its so diametrically opposed to what he believed and to the dignity that he felt that people in government should have.
She mentioned Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) trying to get into a physical fight with labor union leader Sean OBrien in the middle of a Senate committee hearing last year. My father would be appalled at this, she said. This is not a bar. This is in the Senate chambers.
She added that she believed her father would be saddened by the state of the nation as a whole. I think that he would be heartbroken and horrified about where America is and how mired we are in anger, in violence, in disrespect for one another, she said. I think he would heartbroken and I think he would be scared.

Of course, her dad believe in NATO and that the Soviet Union was an existential threat.
Reagan is definitely the direct ancestor of this through Gingrich and the courts.
But the monster is far crazier than they planned...

(1,960 posts)Reagan started his 1980 presidential campaigncampaign at the Neshoba County, Mississippi county fair. Neshoba County was where the three civil rights workers were brutally slain at the hands of the local Klavern in 1964.
Reagan was a fervent union buster who had no problem firing striking air traffic controllers. But it was perfectly Ok for him to lead the Screen Actors Guild in a five week long strike in the 1950s. (he was a Democratic Party supporter back then)
The hate and anger Ms. Davis speaks of is a direct result of the non-stop barrage of right-wing bullshit and propaganda that their followers and supporters marinate themselves in on a daily basis. And the number of right-wing talk shows and broadcasts began to multiply after the Fairness Doctrine was repealed during Reagans second term.

(14,903 posts)I've been to DC nearly 20 times: about evenly divided between the pure fun 🧡 of visiting monuments, museum going, walking the beautiful National Mall, and attending ✊ rallies, and marches! 👍 :signcarryingprotester: emoji.
One of those marches/rallies was a
Pro-Labor March fairly early in Reagan's term.
Effin' bastard! 😡
Deluded daughter. 🙄

(5,842 posts)Reagan started the hateful culture identity politicking that brought us here. He created hateful politics and brought that hate right into the open. The only difference is that it started out as dog-whistling back then with "welfare queens driving Cadillacs" and bullshit that everybody knew was race-baiting. All of the anti-regulation, anti-government bullshit really took off under Reagan.
Is it any wonder the dog-whistling ended up being a bullhorn?
Give me a fucking break.

(2,240 posts)....a couple of miles from where those Civil Rights workers were murdered by the KKK. Damn, that's so foul even having to type it but it sure needs to be included whenever we talk about Reagan. He also sent thugs to beat up college students on their campuses in the '60s. So much infamy with that fake ass mf'er.

The republican party has always been against "We The People".
They only care about corporations, the wealthy, and religious fanatics.
They are liars, cons, thieves, cheats, and hypocrites.

(36,464 posts)They're radicals. They've been drifting right for a long time but IMO when the Republican Party didn't shut Sarah Palin & her racist rhetoric down that's when the supremacists knew they could bring their hate into our public sphere. At least though, their masks are off & I'm at the point where one can't claim they aren't a damned racist if they still associate with or vote republican.
The Republican Party's problem was & still is, their only idea is to rape the planet & give it to those at the top while taking a cut for themselves.
