Several people injured in shooting near Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl victory rally

Several people have been shot after gunfire erupted during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade Wednesday, a police spokesman said.

“At the conclusion of the rally there were shots fired west of Union Station near the garage and several people were struck,” said Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

It was uncertain how many victims were hit by gunfire, but scanner traffic indicated that there might have been as many as nine people shot.

Seems like the only ones who have any freedom anymore are the Magas. WE sure don't. You can't walk anywhere anymore without running into someone carrying a gun. I'd hate to be so afraid that I couldn't walk to my mailbox or to the grocery store, etc., without packing my gun. How terrifying life must be for that kind of person! Personally, seeing the person carrying the gun would scare me more than anything else. As mean and crazy as people are, those packing are as likely to shoot you for just looking at them as not. You just don't know these days. I'm ex-Air Force. I'm not afraid of guns. I used to be a sharpshooter. Spent years training with the NRA as a kid - when the outfit was all about Safety and NOT money and power. Today, at my age, I could probably hit the body mass, but don't ask me to get much more defined than that! (LOL) And frankly, I don't even want to do target shooting anymore. That's just one more thing the Magats have taken all the fun out of and ruined for me.

I mean I can understand the desire to be the good guy with the gun, and maybe keeping others from being hurt or even killed. And it does happen sometimes. But the chances of finding yourself in that position in just not very likely. Or worse, you wind up getting hurt or killed yourself. Too many people feel invincible when they carry a gun. But in most shooting incidents, there is usually someone who doesn't come out on the winning side.

Eleven children are in hospital following the rally, nine with gunshot wounds, Children's Mercy, a Kansas City hospital, said in a statement.

"Those victims brought here from the Union Station incident are being treated by the best trauma specialists in the city," the hospital said.

No ages of the victims were provided.

The police chief had said earlier that no children had been injured in the shooting.

Shifting briefly away from the news conference in Kansas City, a local law enforcement source has told the BBC's US partner, CBS News, that the shooting does not appear to be terror related.

The official said the shooting may have been the result of an argument or dispute between individuals that turned violent.

The source said the investigation is still fluid and nothing has been ruled out.
