Wisconsin 'fake elector' Andrew Hitt says he was tricked into signing document claiming Trump won in 2020

Source: The Hill

02/18/24 9:59 PM ET

The former chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party said Sunday he was “tricked” into signing documents alleging former President Trump won the 2020 election as part of the state’s “fake elector” scheme.

Andrew Hitt told Anderson Cooper in a “60 Minutes” interview that he was advised by the state GOP’s legal counsel to sign the documents as a contingency, in case the Trump campaign’s legal case against Wisconsin’s election integrity succeeded. Hitt said he “wasn’t comfortable with” Trump campaign attempts to toss out votes in Wisconsin, and that he didn’t believe the legal claims of widespread fraud.

“We got specific advice from our lawyers that these documents were meaningless, unless a court said they had meaning,” he said. He added that he felt pressured into signing the document, fearful that he would be held responsible in the situation that the Trump suit won and the electors were not prepared.

“It was not a safe time,” he said. “If my lawyer is right, and the whole reason Trump loses Wisconsin is because of me, I will be scared to death.” “If I knew what I knew now, I wouldn’t have done it,” he continued. “It was kept from us that there was this alternate scheme, alternate motive.”

Why haven't all of these "lawyers" been, at the least, sanctioned? IMO, they should all be disbarred.

Dude is gonna end up disbarred and may go to prison if he can't negotiate a deal. By the way, the young lady that flew the false affidavits to DC is also a lawyer and works for Hitt.

“I didn’t mean to do it mommy” The head of the WI GOP? F…k him!

Of course, the WI AG has done next to nothing at all to prosecute lawbreakers in what could have been the overthrow of America. In my opinion he’s just as bad. Sorry for sullying one of our own, but Josh Kaul is spineless.

I get the fear. I'm sure that was real. The rest is just a giant steaming pile to cover the truth.

He'll need a whole bunch of evidence to back that up. If he was really scared, there'd be recordings, emails, and text messages he's sharing with prosecutors and reporters.

Until then, nothing to see here.

A contingency? It never occurred to him that he could have signed after Trump won the case? Maybe he knew that was never going to happen. In which case, he knowingly committed election fraud by signing while the case was still in court.

Anyone that was elected as an Elector should know what is required and expected.

Each party have Electors ready to go when election results are decided. They would receive notice to show up at the same place each election to perform their duty. Trying to perform that function in a different location should be a red alert. And the document they sign is not the official one.

but that will be used only if certain contingencies actually occur and that would make the claims true, what you do is hang on to it, sign it only if those contingencies actually occur, and only then hand it over to whoever intends to use it. If, however, you've signed and handed in a document containing attestations that are false because the contingency never occurred, don't whine and claim you were duped if you get in trouble for signing a fake document.
