Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has received more criticism from within his own party with North Carolina Rep. Patrick McHenry disparaging him over his failure to pass a Ukraine aid bill.
Speaking on CNN on Sunday, McHenry, who served as interim speaker following the ousting of Kevin McCarthy last year, called on Johnson to pass a bill that would provide aid to Ukraine. McHenry intimated that he was questioning his leadership. Newsweek contacted representatives for Johnson by email to comment on this story.
"My hope is that my Republican leadership will make the right decision, put it on the floor for a vote, and when they do that, it will pass, and it will pass by a wide majority," McHenry said.
When asked about whether he would sign a discharge petition, McHenry added to CNN chief congressional correspondent Manu Raju: "I have not seen one presented, Manu. I have not seen one presented."

(12,313 posts)if you can't get along, and you know what, I don't care.
But alas the chaos, anger, hatred, the lies and conspiracies, destroying democracy the GQP thrust upon us, I do care about.
Vote these motherf***ers out.

(12,436 posts)The Republicans have managed to create a power structure that demands a lack of empathy (ie. "anti-woke" ) but it turns out that empathy is necessary for people to work together and get things done so they've failed because they've rejected a critical leadership skill. How ironic that their anti-woke mindset has become their Achilles heel.

(36,130 posts)he doesn't answer yes to the discharge petition question to avoid probable threats to him personally, so even if he's not running again, he might decide to stay away from signing it. His is more a gesture of trust for the group's reputation, and not really "gloves off" enough to hurt Johnson's.
The group's safety is in numbers, and individual reputations don't matter as much as their safety before trump and his unstable base. That's why many rethugs are leaving, having decided that the cost of their safety isn't worth being a tool for trump or oligarch donors -- who pressure that it's always trump over cult over country.

(129,298 posts)... as a "herd", although they insist that others operate "independently". They saw what happened with the daughter of Darth and her compatriot from IL. The one with the biggest megaphone has been Ken Buck (R-CO), and he's not running again either.
I keep replaying scenes from those 15 votes for McCarthy through my mind, with some of those GOPers (including Buck) who were trying to come up with a deal with the loons like Gaetz, and eventually persisting enough to get one.... And that only lasted a few months.
They created this monster and keep feeding it as they try to back away.

(36,130 posts)That fear for personal safety always gets compliance, but at some point the moral and reputational pressure by even their Democratic colleagues might crack open a few votes. I can't believe they've even sustained this tension for this long. The strain is showing to us who pay attention, while media studiously ignore all that.
We have to relentlessly fight this out to the bitter end, make them realize how thoroughly they will lose. The fight to get Suozzi seated is just another foray.
Hakeem, Jamie, Swalwell, Moskowitz and Frost are good at this battle in the House, while on TV, Schiff, Pelosi and Biden present all the benefits of cooperation to the public.
We need to be born for this year's definitive battle.
