McConnell endorses Trump after years of acrimony between the two men

Source: Washington Post

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) endorsed Donald Trump for president on Wednesday after years of acrimony between the two men, cementing Trump’s continued hold on the Republican Party.

“It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States,” McConnell said in a statement to The Washington Post. “It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support. During his presidency, we worked together to accomplish great things for the American people including tax reform that supercharged our economy and a generational change of our federal judiciary — most importantly, the Supreme Court. I look forward to the opportunity of switching from playing defense against the terrible policies the Biden administration has pursued to a sustained offense geared towards making a real difference in improving the lives of the American people.”

McConnell — who has announced he will step down from his leadership role in November — is one of the most influential Washington Republican to back Trump, and the endorsement was a remarkable if expected move from the Kentucky Republican. He has held out in recent weeks as other Republicans have lined up to back Trump, including many who wanted a different nominee, and his endorsement means almost every powerful cog in the Republican apparatus is directly behind the former president.

The endorsement also comes as former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley announced Wednesday morning she was suspending her campaign, leaving Trump with no major opponents left.

Mitch McConnell endorses Donald Trump in 2024 race: 'He will have my support'

March 6, 2024, 10:32 AM

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has endorsed Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race.

"It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States," McConnell said in a statement Wednesday, just after Nikki Haley exited the race.

"It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support," McConnell added. "During his Presidency, we worked together to accomplish great things for the American people including tax reform that supercharged our economy and a generational change of our federal judiciary - most importantly, the Supreme Court."

"I look forward to the opportunity of switching from playing defense against the terrible policies the Biden administration has pursued to a sustained offense geared towards making a real difference in improving the lives of the American people."

McConnell hates Trump and knows he would be a disaster as president. Couldn't he have just sat down and kept his mouth shut? It must be hard on one's health to lie all the time.

So this is no surprise. He will always support the nominee, regardless of how abhorrent that nominee is.

In that, he's not alone. I think we frequently underestimate just how many Republicans feel the same way. Many detest Trump and will vote for him anyway, because they still believe any R is better than any D.

If anything, this displays how small the republican base has become. It's all MAGA and billionaires. In a way, this reveals the weakness of trump in a general election.

It's also about political power and the ends justifying the means. Their only current option to regain the presidency is Donald Trump, so they will act accordingly. Their power as a party is almost always more important to them than the abhorrent nature of their nominee. Of course, keeping their jobs is also an important factor.

In the end, he's just a tool to get what they want. McConnell unfortunately used him quite skillfully for that purpose. Trump will eventually fade away, go to prison, or die. McConnell's infiltration of the judiciary with Trump as the key will have ramifications for decades.

ALso, you can bet Trump has informed on his wife’s criminality while serving in his regime.

the endorsement the day after Trump's Super Tuesday won't get the media play it would have doing it later when Trump inevitably has a major fuck up and/or Biden has success. Get it out of the way.

McConnell was never going to endorse Biden, and if he had, many on the fringe left would be screaming "see, there is no difference between the two Parties! Why bother voting, or use your vote as a protest vote.".

how some men don't stand up for their spouse, after Trump calls them names and disparages them. The one thing you do in life, that should mean something even if you are personally at odds with your partner, is that vow to support your spouse. These men do not have their wife's back. They let Trump piss on them. They may be jockeying, playing politics, but that's unforgiveable. They let the disgusting rapist have at their wives. What is wrong with them??

I'm sure this is not related. I'm not some conspiracy nut .... right??

A criminal investigation has been opened into the death of Angela Chao, a shipping chief executive and sister-in-law of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who died in a car accident last month.

Chao, the CEO of her family's global shipping company Foremost Group, was found dead shortly after midnight on February 11 after she was submerged in a vehicle that had driven into a pond on a private ranch in central Texas. She was 50 years old.

According to CNBC, the Blanco County Sheriff's Office wrote in a letter to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Thursday that it was investigating Chao's death as a "criminal matter," adding that the "incident was not a typical accident." Law enforcement had originally ruled her death as an "unfortunate accident."
