Supreme Court declines to lift ban on Texas college campus drag show

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a request made by an LGBTQ student group that was hoping to host a “PG-13” drag show on the campus of West Texas A&M University over the objections of administrators.

The court decision in a brief unsigned order means the group, Spectrum WT, likely will not be able to hold the event on March 22 at an on-campus facility. No dissenting votes were noted and the court did not explain its decision.

JT Morris, a lawyer representing Spectrum WT, said the group will continue to protest the ban, with oral arguments coming up in the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals next month.

“The show is not over,” he said. Morris works for the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, which backs free expression on college campuses. A university spokesman declined to comment.

The case is still in the appeals court so they had been trying to get an emergency SCOTUS stay.

Texas A&M is a public university. How is this not a 1st amendment issue? n/t SpankMe Mar 15 #1

I'll bet if someone applied to host a gun show on campus, the court would uphold their 'right' to do so. Aristus Mar 15 #2

Whether it is a valid case or not will be argued at the appeals court in April. The student group involved wanted to bypass the appeals court and asked for the SC to allow their show. The SC rejected that attempt.

hates free speech unless that "free" speech has hundreds of thousands of dollars of perks attached.

Appears even the so-called liberal justices are compromised given no dissenting opinion. We have 9-0 conservative court. No one is coming to save us.
