Florida Rapper Wants to Unseat Democrat, Warns It Could Get 'Nasty'

Source: Newsweek

Luther Campbell, the Miami-based rapper, known as Uncle Luke, said he is mulling a challenge to Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.

Campbell—known for his work in the musical group 2 Live Crew, whose album As Nasty as They Wanna Be became the first album to be ruled obscene in federal court—revealed his interest in running for Congress in a new interview with news outlet The Bulwark published on Friday.

He told the publication he will make a formal decision about whether he will run by Florida's April 26 qualifying deadline and that he believes he has "the opportunity to bring something back to the community."

"And I get to fight these mother*******," Campbell, 63, told the publication, adding that he was referring to "Matt Gaetz, Donald Trump, and all these crazy-a** Republicans who want to divide us."

His brother Stanley entered the Democratic senate primary, running against Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, for the right to take on Rick Scott in November. He lives in my area and I have heard him speak. He is still green as a politician and spoke a lot about his military experience and issues and also his business experience with his company which hunts down (wait for it)...Medicare fraud. Rick Scott gained notoriety as the founder of Columbia/HCA, which pleaded guilty to the largest healthcare fraud case in the nation at the time (1997). At the time of the settlement, Scott had just gotten out the door. The case was brought after a 7-year investigation and Scott "took the fifth" numerous times in court.

Art is art.

My novel has one of the most racist, bigoted characters I've ever created. Does that make me a racist?

Again, art is art.

not sure if labeling something as 'art' really results in the 'pass' that you seem to think.

Are we now suppose pay homage to raging racists and homophobes in country? Decided that blackface and Little Black Sambo are after all just artistic expression? Think you're going to have to count me (and a lot of other 'art lovers'.) out.

(and, yeah, Shakespeare deserves to be called out on his sh*t too)

Calling your misogynist (bigoted?) 'art' trash - is opinion, not censorship - enjoys equal, if not greater, protection - and is about the farthest thing possible from misguided or wrong. Calling out bigotry, racism, misogyny and homophobia is ethically sound and responsible personal and civic action.

Think for a moment - you propose to condemn the people that turn out to protest Nazi marches and gatherings? Support pamphleting neighborhoods with scurrilous antisemitic tripe? Bottom line, your ethical concerns regarding 'protections' for scummy rap lyrics - are both shaky and somewhat confused.

You can buy it. I can - and will - denounce it as the toilet brush (parading itself as 'art') that it is.

Misogyny dressed up with a little bit of glitter and bling - is still lipstick on a (very ugly) pig.
(just as Jim Crow - dressed up as 'state's rights' - is still flat out racism)

Art is art. True. But art as social commentary should promote social responsibility, especially if it's being leveraged as a qualification for public office like in this case.

I mean, hell, Sean Hannity basically weasels out of charges of hurting the public with his commentary by saying it's just "entertainment" -- art is art. I don't think that's the company you want to keep.

."And I get to fight these mother*******," Campbell, 63, told the publication, adding that he was referring to "Matt Gaetz, Donald Trump, and all these crazy-a** Republicans who want to divide us."

Or someone telling the story doesn’t. Any corrections?

Or is this just another case of using celebrity to parachute into high office without much clue of what's involved in the work?
