Rep. Don Bacon: 'It's possible' Johnson could lose speakership over Ukraine

Source: NBC News

March 31, 2024, 9:35 AM EDT

Rep. Don Bacon on Sunday warned that "it's possible" that Speaker Mike Johnson could face a vote to oust him if he moves to pass Ukraine aid in the House.

"I'm not going to deny it," Bacon, R-Neb., said when asked by NBC News' "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker whether it's possible Johnson could lose his speakership over Ukraine aid.

"We have one or two people that are not team — they're not team players. They'd rather enjoy the limelight, the social media," Bacon added, though he did not name any members.

"It's a very narrow majority, and one or two people can make us a minority," he said.

The dems will prop him up. Barring resignations dropping membership below a majority, dems would support him.

He's probably gone in January when they lose the House or if he gets propped up by the Dems, which will bring the Maga wrath down on him, and make his remaining months poisonous.

Anyone paying attention knew what was coming and no one in their right mind wanted to be republican Speaker.

It is hard to know what is the motivating factor with some of these people. I never really understood Kevin McCarthy's blind ambition to become Speaker. In the process, he gave away any power he could possibly possess for five minutes at the top.

4. True, but he has to look past tsf....

He has to know tsf is going to lose in 24.

So what is the play past that? Go down with the ship and hope what's left in the wreckage will still vote for him?

Or stake out indeprndent ground and claim bipartisan credentials?

Is he just toast? Then just resign and leave the house to its own path. Why go through the agony?

7. I think he's just toast though if he blocks everything Magas

tell him to block, he can retain his seat but he will always be addressed as the former speaker regardless I guess. The question is whether he wants to stay in office until January or this May.

He remains speaker for a few more, fleeting months, then the Dems takeover. But at least he won't have to face the career ending humiliation of being booted out of the speaker's chair.

14. Johnson's speaker post was always in danger because it hinges on the whims of GOP nutcases.

They wanted that power and they got it because Kevin McCarthy was so power hungry. It ended up biting him in the ass and will continue to bite any GOPer that takes his place. They're getting what they wanted and really what they deserve.

As long as Empty Greene, Gaetz, Comey, Jordan and several loose cannons keep getting re-elected, there will never be a GOP consensus. There will never be anything resembling leadership from the Repukes.

Use him while we can, then kick the hateful nutcase to the curb. We only need a few more wounded, exhausted repukes to resign and we take charge.
