Gag Order Against Trump Is Expanded to Bar Attacks on Judge's Family

Source: New York Times

The New York judge overseeing Donald J. Trump’s upcoming criminal trial expanded an existing gag order on Monday to bar the former president from attacking the judge’s family members, who in recent days have become the target of Mr. Trump’s abuse.

Justice Juan M. Merchan last week issued an order prohibiting Mr. Trump from attacking witnesses, prosecutors, jurors and court staff, as well as their relatives. That order, however, did not cover Justice Merchan himself or the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, who brought the criminal case against the former president.

And although the ruling issued on Monday still does not apply to the judge or the district attorney, Justice Merchan, granting a request from Mr. Bragg’s office, amended the gag order so that it does now cover their families.

In his ruling, the judge cited recent attacks against his daughter, and rejected Mr. Trump’s argument that his statements were “core political speech.”

every single thing normal people understand is morally or legally wrong, will have to be spelled out in every order issued against this traitor and his gob smacked legal representation

You have to spell out every little detail to a psychopath like Trump because he'll take everything literally. It never occurs to him that there are unwritten rules that most people understand and don't flout.

Disclaimer: I had trouble with unwritten rules and had to have everything spelled out for me when I was young, but over the years, I learned how to navigate social etiquette and tacit rules. It just took me longer.

I wish the judges would spell out EXACTLY how he will be dealt with if he violates the order, that way RW media would lose that talking point when Trump violates the order.

First time he violates it, $50,000 fine.

Second time, $100,000 and 5 days in lockup.

Third time, $100,000 and 15 days in lockup.

If it doesn't sink in after that, bail will be revoked.

He it the golden boy who can never be punished.

Even thought he has over 90 charges against him, I won't be surprised if he dodges all of them.
The legal system seems to be geared to allowing him to do anything he wants without consequences.

the "third time".

There should be no third time. Like the old adage goes, everyone deserves a second chance. But if (or more likely, when) Trump rageposts his way through that second chance on his broke-ass social media site personal blog, then that's that.

After a second violation, his bail is revoked immediately and he gets to cool his heels in a cell on Rikers Island for the duration of the trial.

attack. Of course he won't, and were I to suggest any mild something against Biden I'd be in jail before you could take a deep breath.

Hmmm. I wonder why the difference.

Justice Merchan or Alvin L. Bragg because of TSF's rhetoric? Would he get locked up then? Should that be
spelled out in the gag order?

This trial won't start on April 15, as scheduled.
Trump will get delays until sometime after November.
He always does.

with kid gloves. Throw the jerk in jail. Two sets of laws? Damn sure appears that way. Most of us in this country couldn’t care less if he rots in jail - regardless of his “status” as a Presidential candidate. He’s an ass. Plain and simple. He deserves what all of the rest of us would get in similar circumstances - jail time. This entire fiasco does nothing but infuriate the majority of Americans. We feel helpless. Pawns in Mongo’s game of life.

I guess that most of us on DU are correct in our fears. Garland and Wray are useless. No more pandering. Money talks and bullshit walks sums up the story quite adequately. He’s got the money (?????) or so he claims, and certainly has the bullshit.

What insane times we are living in.

Will appear before one of these ever-so-accommodating judges, and his lawyer will use their leniency about TSF to get their clients similar privileges.

'You let TSF make a mockery of the justice system for most of his life, and did nothing about it, really. So when my client has done something similar, why are you treating him differently? Is everyone equal before the law or not? My client is an American citizen and deserves the same treatment as anyone else. Including TSF.'

It's coming. Some lawyer will eventually go there, because the judges themselves opened that door.

Judge Merchan's warning for Trump:

"Defendant is hereby warned that any violation of this order will result in sanctions under Judiciary Law 750 (A)(#)) and 751."

"Defendant is hereby put on notice that he will forfeit any statutory right he may have to access juror names if he engages in any conduct that threatens the safety and integrity of the jury or the jury selection process."

Lock him the fuck up. After a week or two, deplorables will be forced to face reality or find another grift.

Because Trump is treated uniquely it’s newsworthy. If he’s just awaiting trial in a jail cell like everyone else it’ll get old faster than that time Paris Hilton was locked up.

Yeah, I know. You’re thinking, “who? What? Where? When? The Paris Hilton?” 😂

planned and almost carried out a coup against the US government; stole classified documents and most likely sold them to foreign governments; paid hush money to a porn star in violation with campaign rules, and 3 other things I can't even think of.

And all our justice system has leveled against him is......a gag order!
