Trump campaign calls commission's refusal to move up debates 'unacceptable'

Source: The Hill

04/30/24 6:49 PM ET

Former President Trump’s campaign called the Commission on Presidential Debate’s refusal to move up its debate schedule “unacceptable” Tuesday and suggested the 45th president could go around the body that’s sponsored all general election presidential debates for decades.

“The Presidential Debate Commission’s schedule does not begin until after millions of Americans will have already cast their ballots. This is unacceptable, and by refusing to move up the debates, they are doing a grave disservice to the American public who deserve to hear from both candidates before voting begins,” Trump campaign spokespeople Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles said in a statement.

The Trump campaign had asked the commission earlier this month for debates “much earlier” than the planned kickoff of a first debate in mid-September, as the former president pressures President Biden to go head-to-head.

“We are committed to making this happen with or without the Presidential Debate Commission. We extend an invitation to every television network in America that wishes to host a debate, and we once again call on Joe Biden’s team to work with us to set one up as soon as possible,” LaCivita and Wiles said. The campaign linked to a Monday Fox News report in which the commission reaffirmed its existing schedule. The Hill has reached out to the commission for comment.

“The Presidential Debate Commission’s schedule does not begin until after millions of Americans will have already cast their ballots." Both candidates are the presumptive nominees. Scheduling the debates won't make much of an impact.

"We extend an invitation to every television network in America that wishes to host a debate, and we once again call on Joe Biden’s team to work with us to set one up as soon as possible.” Trump refused to participate in the Republican debates earlier this year. Cool your heels.

What's the hurry? Is Trump's mentation deteriorating faster than expected?

Trump hurt himself in that debate, though, so maybe his current handlers are just looking for an excuse not to debate. I doubt he would be able to restrain himself from ranting and screaming and descending into a blithering idiot on national TV.

Just about everyone here, and similar sites on the other side of the political spectrum, is an anomaly. Better than 90% of voting age citizens don’t look at elections until September, if not later. Heck, there were reports last month that there were people at the polls that didn’t even know that it was a Trump/Biden election!

He’s against early voting he said. He’s bluffing. All bluster. Because he knows he looked weak before when he wouldn’t debate. Now he wants to pretend to look strong like a good predator. But he’s not. And he had no control. Like any narcissist he cracks and gets desperate when senses that can’t control a situation. And he is afraid by the debates dates Biden will have lots more ammo. Eff him. He gets what he gets. Spoiled brat.

In the process, he becomes the subject of another headline. He needs his name to be out there 24/7. It is cheaper than campaign advertising and of course, it satisfies his ego.

As long as people are talking about him, he is still relevant. From his perspective of course.

If they are so concerned about the American people learning what they can about the candidates before they vote they should demand all three courts for which Trump’s felony trials haven’t started to start immediately.

It needs to be clear from the beginning that he’s not in charge and needs to play by the rules. I don’t think he’ll want to debate if he’s required to obey some basic rules. He wants some circus show and that can’t be allowed. And yes, in a few months his declining mental state will be that much more obvious, so he wants to move soon.

and then Illinois on Sept 26th. Which are all after the 1st scheduled debate on Sept 16th: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_United_States_presidential_debates

So yeah, they won't be finished by the time some early voting starts, but if they rushed to do that, then the vast majority of people would be voting long after the debates were over, which is unsatisfactory - many people don't want to be thinking about the election months before it takes place. Trump's team probably want more time to be able to make people (especially independents) forget what a pig's ear he'll make of the debates.

There is no need for a debate. Any rules Trump might agree to would be blown by in the first sixty seconds. Moderators have shown they have no spine in controlling him. The networks are only interested in a Jerry Springer food fight for ratings, not to debate policies or goals. Screw them.
Just say NO, Joe.

1. The one who knows they're losing is the one who clamors for a "debate."
2. The earlier date would allow trump to inject more russian propaganda into the national discourse (much to the delight of the media)
3. Debates with an audience are not serious and merely another "The Morton Downey Jr. Show"

which I can't imagine, but apparently these people exist...

One would expect them to NOT vote early, knowing that the debates are coming up.

It just seems obvious to me that the people who are voting early have already made up their minds and the debates would not affect their decision.

That being said, it's equally clear that this non-reason is just a way to lay the groundwork for refusing to debate "in protest" of the debate commission not agreeing to do things his way, which he knew they wouldn't before even raising the objection.

They had the first (where it was later revealed 45 was an infected COVID super-spreader at the time) and the second one was cancelled due to wanting to do it "virtually" (and you-know-who whining). The 3rd was held with virus mitigation procedures in place.

He did not attend his own party's debates. I don't think that Biden should bother with this nonsense. He's had a taste of debating Trump, and he had to tell him to STFU. Not one Dem would fault him for saying, "No, thanks."

Besides, this smells like trial delay. Trump isn't interested in contrasting his views with Biden's. He's interesting in weaseling out of his Porn Star Hush Money election fraud trial, which he is going to lose. I hear the trial is going really well for the Prosecution.

Nope, no debate for you. "I have to campaign." Change that to, "I have to delay." So far he's got his poor son's HS grad lined up. Now, he's trying to line up a Presidential debate or two. Or three. Maybe four.

He could try:

Catching pneumonia from the cold, cold courtroom, blaming it on the cold-hearted Judge;
Shitting his pants in the Courtroom and getting hauled out on a gurney;
Offing another family member, good for at least one day off;
Using a magic marker to outline a dangerous hurricane heading toward Mar a Lago where his beloved wife Melania is trapped and needs rescue;
Entertaining Orban while they strategize the quickest way to turn our country into Trumplandia;
Visiting the Ukrainian front while he brokers a Ukrainian surrender to Russia (oh wait, not that, too dangerous...)
Catching the Bird Flu from all the Chickenshit Supreme Court Justices who support his Dictatorship.
etc.
