Vice President Harris dropped an f-bomb as she gave advice to young Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander people Monday, prompting applause from her audience.
We have to know that sometimes people will open the door for you and leave it open. Sometimes they wont, and then you need to kick that f‑‑‑ing door down, Harris said at the annual Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies Legislative Leadership summit. Excuse my language, Harris added amid cheers. Actor and comedian Jimmy O. Yang, who was moderating the conversation with the vice president, quipped that we gotta make T-shirts with that saying.
The expletive came after Yang asked Harris to reflect on her experience as the first Black American and South Asian American vice president of the U.S. and how her heritage has informed her views and role as a leader. Heres the thing about breaking barriers. Breaking barriers does not mean you start on one side of the barrier and you end up on the other side. Theres breaking involved, and when you break things you get cut. And you may bleed. And it is worth it every time, Harris said.
The vice presidents appearance at the leadership summit comes as the Biden administration celebrates Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. President Biden and Harris are also set to deliver remarks at a White House reception honoring the month Tuesday evening.

(112,787 posts)I only find it alarming when f bombs in all their various forms are substituted for all other adjectives and adverbs. That gts tiresome.
An occasional fuckbomb is good for the heart and soul and should be good for the reputation. We don't need plaster saints or bronze heroes. We need competent human beings in government.

(22,978 posts)and not as an expletive. Those are words that get used by 8 year olds and definitely not intelligent but lazy writing. A well placed curse should be used as a spice...sparingly.

(2,924 posts)As a matter of fact, people tend to temper their language when in my presence.
If I do explode with one, those who know me know I mean business.
Strong words can lose their power if used too frequently.

(22,978 posts)Also, those who know me understand that if I reach the point where I swear, I mean business.
I once worked with a guy, a nice guy, that every third word out of his mouth was an f-bomb or a derivative. Kind of like how some people will say "and, um" or "you know".
But saying is once thing, writing indicates intention.

(7,648 posts)that VP HArris does use them sparingly. And it would also appear she can read a room. I'm deducing that from the fact that enthusiastic applause was mentioned. in connection with the phrase in question, and not otherwise (though i assume there may well may have been some at the beginning and end of the speech, since those are customary.

(14,312 posts)He "went there" already. The good decent God fearing, family first, anti crime, polite Republican has left the building.....long ago.
For decades any "bad language" was used against Democrats and liberals in general. From Lenny Bruce to George Carlin. Even politically, someone like Van Jones gets fired from the Obama admin for daring to call Republicans "assholes" for promising to vote NO on everything Obama put forth. In the past Democrats have been very wary of even hinting at colourful language so as to not piss off the religious community.
The "lily livered" crowd of religious fundamentalists that abhor foul language as from the Devil are a dying breed. If they can embrace such a foul mouthed asshole like Trump, then they are exposed as hypocrites of the highest order if they then will criticize any "bad language" from a Democrat.
So I say let er rip!
Ok if she stoops to his level?

(17,997 posts)I mean that sincerely, when you put it that way. That language doesn't bother me at all, but I know not everyone feels that way.
But it lands a lot differently when you say "I am disappointed," as opposed to "This is disappointing." The former is a statement about hiw you feel. "This is disappointing" can come off a little judgmental, even if you didn't mean it that way. I have a feeling that's what Hermit-The-Prog was responding to.
After all, disappointment, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

(4,049 posts)I'd like to share my perspective on the recent speech by VP Harris. While I deeply admire her and appreciate her passion for the issues she advocates for, I found her use of vulgar language in the speech to be concerning.
In my opinion, the use of such language, particularly in a public setting, sets a precedent that may not align with the values we want to instill in young girls and boys who look up to our leaders as a role models. It's essential to promote respectful and civil discourse, especially in the public sphere, where our words carry weight and influence.
While I understand that emotions can run high when discussing important issues, I believe that we can express our points of view effectively without resorting to vulgar language. By maintaining a respectful tone and focusing on the substance of our arguments, we can engage in meaningful discussions that foster understanding and promote positive change.
I encourage us to embrace a language that reflects our values and encourages inclusivity. Let's strive for a discourse that inspires and empowers individuals of all ages, particularly our young generation, to engage in constructive dialogue and make a difference in their communities.

(1,423 posts)but sadly, those little girls no doubt are hearing that language already, at school, perhaps at home, on outings . . . . I don't believe there is any way to keep our young ones from picking up foul language --
Except for teaching them vocabulary and encouraging them to read so they can increase their vocabularies even more.
Oopsie Daisy
(4,049 posts)* more challenging when kids justify it with "... but Vice President Harris uses the F-word!" (Or "... but Senator Fetterman has a potty mouth!'') And in the end, it just lowers the bar and does nothing to promote a respectful conversation among our representatives. I believe that we should hold our elected representatives to a higher standard, especially the President and Vice President.
The headline is that VP Harris "dropped the f-bomb" and that's what most people will remember, rather than whatever the message was she was trying to convey.

(9,411 posts)Have their place and purpose. But you cannot let decorum and civility stop you speaking to people with the same urgency and intensity as the situation they face and words they use to face it.
All language, even the naughty words, have a purpose and help you connect with listener so that they not only hear your words but connect with them at more than a superficial or passing level.
The problem is the stereotype of political double-speak and voters who don't think politicians are actually listening or actually understand their path in life.
They want to hear and feel a connection...and sometimes that means saying the word "fuck" every now and again.

(137,926 posts)His passing was a gut punch.
I had been listening to him since he had a brief show (was subsequently fired) here in Philly in the '90s on WWDB 96.5, and me and my mom followed him on stations when possible, wherever he managed to broadcast from that we could pick up (including his show's syndication on WHAT 1340 here in Philly). Whenever I traveled down to D.C. metro for work, I'd tune him in on WWRC (and was actually down there when he announced on his show that Michael Jackson had died). His show at the time was literally in a slot between Oliver North and G. Gordon Liddy on that station.
My subscription to XM Radio in 2007 (which eventually merged to become SiriusXM) was because I discovered that is where he also started simulcasting, and finally remained for good once he left terrestrial radio.

(20,487 posts)grassroots level of local stations. I had only enjoyed his talk show for last 9 years or so on Sirius XM. Hell forever be in our hearts.
BumRushDaShow
(137,926 posts)where one time when he was on the way to his studio and would pass by the station's fax machine, he noticed that there were RW talking points that were faxed in for North and Liddy. I swear, his show at that time on that station, being between those two, meant that he would get attacked by all the loon listeners of those shows and that just fired him up even more. He would easily take them on and dismantle them, piece by piece!
When he was on here locally in Philly, his show was actually a graveyard shift show and my mother would call me at like 11 pm before the show came on (she was a night owl and I am a robin) and would say "Turn on Madison!!!!".
Loved when he would bring on Dick Gregory.

(10,210 posts)... I know I'm probably in the minority, here, but I wish she had not used "The F-Word" in her speech. I'm sure it was calculated and guess the campaign has approved. One of the things most obvious about Trump is his vulgarity. He is vulgar in many ways and uses vulgar language regularly. He REEKS vulgarity, while Biden and Harris are exceptionally decent and professional.
