President Joe Biden on Thursday signed sweeping aviation legislation that will boost U.S. air traffic controller staffing, increase funding to avert runway close-call incidents and speed up refunds for canceled flights.
The $105 billion, five-year measure reauthorizes the Federal Aviation Administration. It prohibits airlines from charging fees for families to sit together, requires airplanes to be equipped with 25-hour cockpit recording devices, raises maximum civil penalties for airline consumer violations from $25,000 per violation to $75,000 and boosts aircraft production scrutiny.
Following flight disruptions, runway close calls and consumer frustrations, this law is set to deliver the safest, most reliable aviation system in the world, said Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell. Plane manufacturers will see more safety inspectors on factory floors and tougher safety standards from the FAA.
Biden has repeatedly clashed with air carriers, calling for new stricter consumer rules and harshly criticizing them for imposing fees. His administration has also aggressively moved to block further consolidation in the passenger airline industry, including successfully blocking a tie-up between JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines and quashing an alliance between JetBlue and American Airlines.

This is one of those 5-year appropriations and as a note from the OP article, it is through legislation by Congress where "penalties" (and what those penalties might be, including amounts of fines, etc), are authorized.

(30 posts)that quietly gets passed with the Biden administration getting no accolades and no credit for. It's a shame that this bill wasn't signed in in time to stop Fat Donnie from clipping that plane at the Atlantic City Airport last week. It seems like the MSM fails to inform the masses of anything that the Biden administration gets done. But, oh boy if he stutters, it's front page news. I also lay blame for the lack of enthusiasm for Biden at the feet of his fellow Democrats. Very few seem to support him and tout the accomplishments of the administration. Unless that is if they get atta boys from their constituents. Protect the party, protect Democracy, stand with Joe Biden.

(7,068 posts)He's old enough to remember the stuff which must be undone so we can get back to square one. Placing the FAA aright is a great move. Maybe even giving entities such as PATCO support on a new mission for a new age.
Strengthening regulatory agencies to better serve the people is a practical necessity toward that end. Rooting out the crooks who've crawled into the structure of a progressive American government will remain a ceaseless task until elementary students are taught how mindless the electorate was in 1980 to give the reins of regulatory power to the corporate-profits-over-the-good-of-the-people movement.
We'd been already told how it was happening by Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein and W. Harrison decades before. Too many people didn't appreciate old fashioned Sci-fi, I guess.
