Florida attorney general says state will investigate Starbucks for DEI practices

Source: USA Today

Published 11:01 a.m. ET May 23, 2024 | Updated 11:01 a.m. ET May 23, 2024

Florida's top legal officer on Wednesday said the state will investigate Starbucks, the multinational chain of coffeehouses, for its diversity, equity and inclusion practices.

"So many of these DEI policies that have been pushed in corporate America that were meant to address and prevent discrimination are now pushing policies and programs and initiatives that may in fact be unlawful employment practices, in fact becoming discriminatory themselves," Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody said, while appearing on Sean Hannity's radio show, which Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis guest hosted.

Moody filed a complaint with the Florida Commission on Human Relations, which she said would launch a "full investigation." The decades-old commission is meant to enforce the Florida Civil Rights Act and address discrimination issues. "We're going to make sure that this quota for hiring and programs that cause every employee to determine whether they are the problem based on the color of their skin, whether that violates Florida's anti-discrimination laws," Moody said.

The governor, an opponent of DEI programs who signed a bill last year banning such initiatives at state universities, thanked her for the work: "You should treat people as individuals, judge them based on the content of their character, not the color of their skin or their ethnicity or anything like that." Both the Commission on Human Relations and Starbucks did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Tallahassee Democrat, part of the USA TODAY Network.

He's competing with Abbott to see who can be the most racist, homophobic, misogynist, anti-immigrant and despicably hateful candidate. In other words, the biggest asshole in the Republican primary field.

...are constitutionally set. Two terms consecutive, then four years out of office before they can try again.

It would take a 60% yes vote via referendum to make the change.

It's shocking how many times I've heard conservative whites claim they're being persecuted. I think they're just pissed that somewhere in America a POC is getting equal treatment under the law. “When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression."

Fuck?

I remember ads making fun of lib’rul policies that, yeah, from some perspectives, might be too far in left field. But that was what a healthy, conservative party was for and should still be today: Each party acting as a check on the other to prevent excesses.

But the Reichwingers with their flying monkeys, Klanbaggers and MAGAts have become what they accused the left of being and doing. Loony and radical. Combine that with their being reactionary, regressive, theocratic, anti-democratic, and authoritarian, and hoo-boy, that’s a recipe for disaster. Many of these fanatics, to abuse and torture this word and its meaning, can be downright rabid.

But nobody I know of that I have seen within the last few years lives there. Not to mention it is too expensive. My family is scattered all over (Montana, Georgia, California, Wisconsin), so where could I go? Also, at the time (2015), there weren't many job opportunities in Maine, where my parents lived at the time. It wasn't a political decision, it was the fact I wouldn't have been doing much up there. Even though I hate the government here in Florida, I really don't have any really good options.

Republicans are moving toward making it ILLEGAL to NOT discriminate. That's how white-supremacist they are.

As the US evolves into becoming a majority minority country, the White Party (i.e., GOP) is getting more desperate and will be doing more daring things to keep their hold on the country's institutions and levers of power.

But, there's no need. It isn't a zero-sum game. Mexicans and gays with Starbucks jobs are not displacing white people. Jews are not replacing us - whoever "us" is.

Repubs are not only trying to force their worldview by dominating government institutions and elected offices, but by going after schools, DEI initiatives in the private sector, the healthcare system - the connective tissue of society. They're like a virus that's trying to infect society at the cellular level.

We need the full force of America's minority communities to step up and vote. Sitting things out isn't an option. Plus, we need more minorities in government and private institutions to keep that diverse perspective in there.

I'm not saying that members of minority communities can't be conservative or voting Republican. The Democrats aren't necessarily "entitled" to minority votes. But looking at the big picture, the more minority involvement in public affairs, the better, more fair and more tolerant of a society we become. The more conservative involvement in public affairs, the more violent, discriminatory and "don't-give-a-shit-about-anybody-but-me" we become.

Allow me to re-affirm: Republicans can eat my ass.
