Trump Pressures Republicans to Pass a Law to Keep Him Out of Jail Forever
Source: Rolling Stone
May 24, 2024
Donald Trump likes to tell anyone who will listen that hes absolutely convinced he will win his 2024 rematch against President Joe Biden. And, according to people whove spoken to the ex-president about this, Trump also seems convinced that if he wins another four years in the White House, state prosecutors will still be waiting for him on the other side of his term ready to put him on trial, or even in prison, just as they are now.
To avoid such risks, the former and perhaps future president of the United States wants Congress to create a very specific insurance policy that would help keep him out of prison forever, two sources familiar with the matter tell Rolling Stone. Trump vaguely alluded to this idea last week outside his New York criminal hush money trial, when he said he has urged Republican lawmakers to pass laws to stop things like this.
In recent months, the sources say, Trump has spoken to several GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill, attorneys, and other associates about the possibility of Republicans passing legislation in a second Trump term that would shield former presidents (i.e. Trump) from non-federal prosecutions. In recent conversations with closely-aligned lawmakers, Trump has pressured them to do so, describing it as imperative that he signs such a bill into law, if he again ascends to the Oval Office.
This, of course, would require that Republicans keep the House, take back the Senate, and have enough votes and agreement on the wisdom of these ideas to get it done. Even after a second term, he doesnt think any of this is going to end, says one of the sources. He doesnt think Democrats are going to quit coming after him.

(688 posts)but he's right win or lose in 2024 prosecutors are NOT going to stop coming after him. He's a criminal and he deserves to prosecuted wherever he has committed crimes.
Justice matters.
(9,787 posts)It should be pretty clear by now that he is above all laws (although he shouldn't be...) and he knows it so this is just another idiotic move to keep himself into the news cycle every damn minute he can find (same "tactic" as in 2016) and it keeps on working...
So so so so tired of his smelling shite.
Nothing will happen to him ever.

(1,181 posts)That state AG will go after him for any reason is not true.
Not one state AG went after Trump for manslaughter for COVID.

(20,870 posts)Look up he word dictator.
If he's able to see the Oval Office and if republicans are in charge of congress, he can arrange for a law that keeps him in office until death, when Donald Un Junior takes over.
Maybe it won't work though because he'd have to have the courts on his side. Wait a minute.....

(52,344 posts)So, in another words, he wants the US Congress to pass laws that will interfere with State Law.
It will never happen. Not to mention that the first to shoot it down will with the Conservative-leaning US Supreme Court.

(7,920 posts)might get the impression they have been living their life all wrong all those years.
But not Trump.
Not a care about what he has done, he gave himself permission after all, so the search for avoidance of the consequences is his main focus.
So yes, expect the bleating about Witch Hunt, Democrats are victimising him, etc to continue.
