FORT PIERCE — A star-spangled banner flew upside down Wednesday at the United States Post Office on Orange Avenue, days after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito faced criticism for years-old pictures of the same sight at his home.

The upside-down American flag has been a symbol used by "Stop the Steal," groups backing false conspiracy theories that the 2020 presidential election actually was won by former President Donald Trump, only to be stolen by President Joe Biden.

I retired from the Postal Service a dozen years ago. We functioned under a very strict enforcement of the Hatch Act. If I had a partisan bumper sticker on my car I couldn't park in our parking lot. Putting up and taking down the flag was an assigned duty. An actual investigation should require a single phone call...

where you can do whatever you want with "signs/stickers" outside of the office. So I damn sure had my lawn signs! But in the past, that was always a question and issue. There are still some restrictions for uniformed services/federal LEO and I think certain levels of senior management.

I've lived in Fort Pierce for over 10 years and I find this perplexing. I frequently visit the Orange Ave. PO and it has a diverse workforce. My first reaction was that someone showed up for work with a hangover. When I was in 8th grade I accidentally put up the flag upside down...it was embarrassing to have to put it up correctly with a couple of police officers, the janitor, and the principal watching me but that was the worse of it. The Orange Ave. PO is a real dump, the tile is all worn, the lights dim, no landscaping...maybe the employee was protesting the condition of the building.

As a side comment re: the Columbine shooting.......There was an incredible amount of information that was not shared with the public and the information that was disclosed, was seriously twisted and/or censored, to downplay horrific details.......probably to avoid pissing off the gun fanatics and second amendment crowd......

27. The way it is put up is easy.

When I was in Grade school in Canada we had to raise the flag every morning. Also in boyscout events. We folded the flag into a bundle then attached it to the rope to haul it up the pole. When up you gave the other side of the rope a tug and the flag then unfurled. You didn't want to get it wrong and have everyone watch your flag unfurl upside down .
