A New York jury on Thursday found former President Donald Trump guilty of all 34 felony charges of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels by his then-personal lawyer before the 2016 election.
Trump is the first former U.S. president to be found guilty of any crime. His sentencing was quickly scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. ET.
Trump, who is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, faces a maximum possible sentence of four years in prison for each count. Trump's demeanor did not change during the reading of the verdict. His son Eric Trump looked angry after the jury foreman repeatedly said "guilty" to each count as it was read.
The 12-member jury deliberated less than 10 hours over two days before sending out a note to Judge Juan Merchan saying they had reached a verdict. Before the announcement, Trump, his lawyers, prosecutors and reporters expected the jury to be dismissed for the day at 4:30 p.m.

"We the jury have a verdict. The entire rest of his life is gonna be controlled by others. No more flying off to Monaco or cheating on golf. He's gonna have to stay home. Every day. Until he dies. Every day. No unsupervised trips. Visitors will also be searched, must be identified and logged and for a limited time daily. His home will be regularly searched and tossed. Unannounced searches. Food might be better but he has to pay for it. If he's wiped out financially, he'll lose Marbled Legos.
Not good enough, but it's the start we got.

No part of the sentence will be carried out until the appeals process is finished. That will take us past election day.

I do agree about the appeal, obviously. That's a given. The man sues at the drop of a hat. Whether it'll be accepted on any grounds HE alludes to or not, is something else. I'm of the opinion that an appeal is not an automatic thing in NY for him. I do agree the whole thing will take us past election day.
But we DO have multiple convictions now for a freaking candidate, and I can't help but believe that will work in OUR favor come election day!

But then we will need to get to work on the Biden campaign. These convictions will energize Trump supporters to get out and vote under the rallying cry that the trial was political persecution. They will react to it the same way that we react to the overturning of Roe.
So, today we enjoy the big news. Then we buckle down to elect Biden.

So I am unsure whether this totally disqualifying news (which would normally have a major party find a new candidate, even at this late date) will significantly change the polls, especially when DJT inevitably appeals. Polls say that a number of voters have SAID this is a red line for them but, as Clemenceau said about Wilson's 14 points -- "We shall see"

(2,332 posts)Read the map more carefully. Florida is orange on that map, which means SOME people with felony convictions cannot vote. NOT ALL.
A felony conviction in another state makes a person ineligible to vote in Florida only if the conviction would make the person ineligible to vote in the state where the person was convicted.
https://www.usvotefoundation.org/voting-rights-restoration/florida
And in New York, you can have a felony conviction and vote if you are on probation, but not if you're in prison. I hate to break it to you, but it's exceedingly likely that this traitor gets probation, not a prison sentence.

(10,297 posts)I personally believe that there was always a tone of racism lying underneath it, that the civil wars, the coups detat, the corruption, and the replacement of rule of law by dictatorship was something a lot of Americans in and out of ruling circles believed was at least partially caused by the Latin Americans being (supposedly) inferior brown people and not of European descent. This strand began to gather more strength while Dubya was President (Although to give Dubya credit, he opposed it), then came into full flower when Donald John began running for president. This strand is still very much there and is likely to linger in Republican voter psychology for decades to come.
That Latin American countries can and do occasionally prosecute and even jail crooked ex-presidents is something I dont think little MAGAs want to think about.
Martin68
(27,749 posts)You are absolutely correct about the racism inherent in American exceptionalism. As there was in British exceptionalism, French exceptionalism, Japanese exceptionalism, and probably every country with a similar theory of superiority. When I lived in Liberian bush for two years, I was shocked to find out that the people of my small village didn't trust and felt superior to the people in the next village down the road. It appears to be a deep-seated instinct in humans that can only be softened through education.

Trump is the first former president to have been liable for sexual abuse. He was the first president to get caught overseeing a fraudulent charity. And a fraudulent university. And a business that was found to have repeatedly committed fraud.
In 2021, Trump became the first president to deny his successor a peaceful transition of power in the wake of his defeat. He was similarly the first president to try to hold onto power in defiance of election voters......
The presumptive GOP nominee can now add a new first to the list: Trump is the first former president to be found guilty of multiple felonies. My MSNBC colleague Jordan Rubin explained:
Donald Trump was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. ... Trumps sentencing will happen at a later date. Incarceration is not mandatory in this case. For each count, Trump could just be fined or receive a maximum sentence of up to 4 years (though under such a sentence he could still be released in closer to a year).
An NBC News report confirmed that Judge Juan Merchan ordered a sentencing hearing to begin at 10 a.m. on July 11. The Republican National Convention is scheduled to begin on July 15.

This feels rather like the guy who punches you for fun and never gets caught but has been seen punching you and his parents have been called in.
This is a win for every person, even the R's, because we have finally shown the world we do not like to be pushed around by a big, stinking bully. This big stinking bully has no idea how this could happen, how or why. He is so far gone he has no clue that he cannot treat all the rest of us this way and even though he thinks he has enough people on his side even they have a limit. Granted we have not seen that happen yet, the stupid is still out there but I know if it was me he would be in a nasty, cold and almost cruel cell for the rest of his ill begotten life. Cruel enough to make him wish he was dead but not torture.
I do not know what the MAGATS are going to do with this, it will be interesting to see what happens. I would guess that a lot of them will say they are sticking with him just because the are afraid of the others out there. That seems to happen a lot. They will not vote for him but they will say they are, I have a cousin like that (I hope).
Actually it really stinks for us to all have had to go through this. There is still a long way to go. We must help our "not so smart or kind" citizens to feel the goodness of not being cruel. To not have to worry that the guy next to you, who has all the power (some men) isn't really sliding his hand up your thigh during the board meeting and that is is totally OK to stand up, smack the back of his head and go call his wife.
Suffer Mr. Trump, as so many have under your stupid, rich thumb.

Biden can pummel Trump with this at a debate and Trump has no comeback for it. The adjudicated rapist and convicted felon will sit in his Florida roach motel and send out tweets rather than actually show up and confront the president.

(27,749 posts)This is a historic day for the Republic, one which will stand as a turning point in the drift towards fascism. I'm not suggesting the danger is over, but this was an essential step towards proving that the rule of law still stands, and the American system of justice has not been broken by this fascist's attempts to destroy every obstacle in his path to total power.

Those that tended to be for Biden and Democrats were smiling.
Those that were sort of for Dumpy the Clown and somewhat Repukes, were not. They were mostly glum and sanguine.
I was um... not. Tee Hee.

(7,920 posts)The GOP thinks he can lead them.
People will still vote for him.
Maybe put him in the White House again.
(And his revenge for the 'politically motivated' indignities he thinks he has suffered will be swift and brutal.)
The battle isn't over. Not until the fat lady sings.
Or until we hear the punishment metered out by the court.

What a glorious day yesterday was and continues to be!
About Trump going to prison, that would be so unjust if he got probation instead of jail time after his co-conspirator Michael Cohen, who did the same crime and at the direction of Trump, went to prison. Trump deserves more prison time than Cohen, not less or no prison time.
It's waaaaaay past time to stop treating Trump like a real president or real former president and start treating him like the conman criminal fraudster he really is. In light of the jury's verdict yesterday, Trump stole the 2016 election so he was never really president and now, he never will be again.
And by the way, THANK YOU, JURORS!!!!! You have done nothing less than save democracy!!!
