Dr. Anthony Fauci is facing intense scrutiny from House Republicans at a hearing on Monday as lawmakers continue to scrutinize his response to the COVID-19 pandemic and examine theories of the origin of the virus.
Fauci previously proclaimed that he has "nothing to hide" and is coming before the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic voluntarily. It marks the first time he's publicly testified since he left the federal government at the end of 2022 after five decades of service.
Fauci's appearance on Capitol Hill comes amid a contentious election cycle, with Republicans continuing to hammer him on his response to the virus -- everything from mask mandates to vaccine guidelines and origin possibilities.
"Americans were aggressively bullied, shamed and silenced for merely questioning or debating issues such as social distancing, masks, vaccines or the origins of COVID," chairman Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, said as the hearing kicked off. Wenstrup, who said he was seeking accountability in this hearing, accused Fauci of overseeing "one of the most invasive regimes of domestic policy the U.S. has ever seen." Fauci addressed those issues, and Republican attacks, in his opening statement, calling certain matters "seriously distorted."

Aside from the fact that the GOP is delusional, this will really backfire because honestly, people don't want to talk about COVID. The massive amount of travel and spending that is helping to fuel the U.S. economy at the moment, is due to that pent-up demand after almost 4 years of COVID impacts. And yes, I am still masking inside retail establishments and I did so when I was on jury duty back in April during the trial.

House Republicans are poised to grill Dr. Anthony Fauci at a hearing on Monday as lawmakers continue to scrutinize his response to the COVID-19 pandemic and examine theories of the origin of the virus.
Ahead of the hearing, House Republicans requested access to Fauci's personal email account and cellphone records after obtaining information they claim calls into question whether the nation's former top infectious disease expert may have tried to keep some records out of the public eye.
Fauci previously proclaimed that he has "nothing to hide" and is coming before the panel voluntarily. It will mark the first time he's publicly testified since he left the federal government at the end of 2022 after five decades of service.

(169,727 posts)and is now running on "We will only do the opposite of what Democrats do" (even if it was something originally proposed by a Republican and actually accepted by Democrats - see that Senate Border bill). Meaning that they will lock on to whatever is "opposite" of what we do, and will not let go.
E.g., if a Democrat looks out the window and notices that it has started to rain, when it's time to go out for lunch, they will bring an umbrella to deal with it. Meanwhile the loon Republican will not only insist that the Democrat is lying about it raining, they will go full throttle trying to ban umbrellas. Because. Democrats used one. THEN when they walk out and get wet, they will manufacture a conspiracy theory that Democrats seeded the clouds just at that moment in order to poison the U.S. with toxic rain.

(2,332 posts)They're still all in on:
Cutting taxes on the rich and corporations to zero.
Gutting labor protections
Eradicating the minimum wage
Deregulating and privatizing everything not nailed down
Destroying all non-military spending save for their own salaries and bennies,
Robbing Social Security and Medicare blind
Abolishing the rights (including voting) of all liberals, women, LGBTs and minorities
Forcing the christian torture cult on everyone
Creating an outright police state...
You know, the same ol' same ol' they've always been up to.

(169,727 posts)follow whatever their "dear leader" tells them at a particular moment in time. So for example with respect to this -
when the GOP has been trying to repeal or hinder mail voting, having believed it was some sort of "conspiracy" to commit fraud per their "dear leader" in 2020, and then "dear leader" suddenly shifts and says "No! It's no longer 'fraud'". Then their heads explode trying to turn that juggernaut around.
After blaming his 2020 loss on mail balloting, Trump tries to make GOP voters believe its OK now
And for this - the neocon's wet dream -
45 threatens to pull out of NATO, essentially torpedoing the PNAC concept of "spreading democracy around the world".
And for this -
That doesn't apply to their DOJ, that would be militarized using "regulations" to go after "the enemies of their (fascist) state".
ANY and ALL of their former policy positions can and have been reversed by "deal leader" (i.e., whoever the last person was with a suggestion that gets whispered in his ear, is the one he listens to and adopts that position).

(196,490 posts)He denied it, politicized it, ignore it (lost February), blamed everyone else, etc because of his own ego. He was basically handed a second term and he screwed that up too.
They are better served to let it go because we havent really even talked about that yet. We are distracted by his stealing, lying, cheating, raping, and trying to change his LOSS.

(8,999 posts)They need to Leave Dr. Fauci Alone.
Dr. Fauci has been attacked and it's really upsetting for me. That man gave 5 decades of his life to serve our country in one of the highest offices in the country and they attacked him for doing his job. The GOP will not benefit from this and I am going to support the Dr for the rest of his life. Shame on them for attacking him and making him come and testify.

(24,618 posts)"You democrap meanies made us wear masks! Making kids wear masks is child abuse! What if you can't breathe with the mask on? (an actual response I got when I asked a store clerk to put her mask back on 4 years ago) Our Lord and Savior (the orange fuckface) said it will go away by itself! And isn't it a fact that Bill Gates gave you millions so you would approve putting chips in the vaccine?"
I requested sour cream and cheddar for my chips.

(106,201 posts)The right wing hatred and vilification of Dr. Fauci is one of the most inexplicable things about the pandemic - unless you assume they're a bunch of malevolent children who are too young to understand how infection works, and just want to hurt the person who stopped their fun.

(1,664 posts)Standing closely in lines squeezed back to stomach, back to stomach is positively awful, always - no matter other circumstances.
People around here retain the distancing practice somewhat.
The need to use masks was logical.
I never got the fury about masking and now distancing is thrown in there?
