CNN The US Secret Service is in talks to expand its security perimeter around the Milwaukee arena where the Republican Party will host its national convention this year, three sources familiar with the plans told CNN. The discussed expansion would bar protesters from being allowed to gather in a large park near the venue.
The talks come after a monthslong dispute between the Secret Service and the GOP over security measures around the convention, which will take place from July 15 to 18. The party has accused the agency of ignoring its concerns, while the Secret Service has said Republicans were undermining efforts to keep the event safe. The Washington Post first reported on the new security measures under consideration.
In a statement to CNN, Trump campaign adviser Danielle Alvarez praised what she described as the Secret Services decision to keep protestors away from Pere Marquette Park, the largest public park near the venue. We applaud Secret Service leadership for including Pere Marquette Park in the security perimeter and we implore local officials to expedite the permit application for this park and choose a different location for the First Amendment zone, Alvarez said.
However, an official involved in the process warned that no formal decision has been made at this point and that the Secret Service is still waiting to learn whether the GOPs permit to hold its own activities in the park will be approved. At present, it is unclear whether the city of Milwaukee will allow any such activities to take place in the park.

Respect government civil servants. (R) don't.

(7,782 posts)I'd guess. I won't go to the full article. It does PO me that they're arguing over "security" for R's and where the line should be, when not one agency is talking about the right of Protestors to be there and fulfill their First Amendment rights.
DO we have any more rights are not any longer? Are we still living under a Constitution? Or have the R's just swept in and, Prez or not, just taken everything over? Because right now, that's what it's feeling like to me.

(33,424 posts)I live in Chicago and to date they have refused any permits to protestors. They are setting up a confrontation because there will be protests, permit or no permit.

(7,782 posts)at the Democratic convention and someone would shoot Biden...or any other Dem. There'd be dancing in streets afterwards. R's have no decency or respect.

(7,782 posts)convention. With his advancing age, he's lost a lot of those memories. It all seems so "new" and "now" to him, thanks to his failing memory and the magats.

(169,316 posts)I would hope that after 56 years and a successful and non-eventful convention that happened there since, that the invocation of "1968" as a cudgel to flog Democrats with, would finally be put to rest!

and multiple checkpoints on the way in should do it.
We don't want prison to come as a big shock to most of the speakers.

(1,933 posts)The protesters were kept blocks away from Bushie and the Repubs in "Free Speech Zones."
They'll try to do it again in MIlwaukee.
