Duke Energy power equipment in Durham found damaged from gunfire after power outage, police say

DURHAM, N.C. — Damage to a utility's power equipment by gunfire found in Durham was associated with an outage that left hundreds of customers without power earlier this week, the company said. About 730 customers experienced a power outage for about two hours Monday after reports of a “fire and equipment failure” on Duke Energy's power distribution grid, spokesperson Jeff Brooks said in an email.

A day later, the Durham Police Department, with assistance from the FBI, responded to an area in southeast Durham after receiving a call about the damaged power equipment, according to a police statement. The company's workers told officers that the equipment had been damaged by gunfire within the past week.

Damage from the gunfire caused a “slow oil leak” from the power equipment, which ultimately led to a fire, police said. The incident is under investigation and no one had been arrested as of Thursday. While Duke Energy verified the damage was associated with the outage, Brooks said the company hasn't confirmed what ultimately led to the equipment failing and is waiting until the investigation is completed.

“We have been working to strengthen our electric grid to make it more resistant to extended outages from severe weather, as well as physical and cyber threats,” Brooks said. “We are also improving the resiliency of the grid to help restore power faster when a disruption occurs.” Officials didn't specify what kind of equipment was damaged. The incident comes as North Carolina lawmakers have advanced legislation to toughen penalties for people who carry out attacks on infrastructure such as public water sites and manufacturing facilities.

I would not be surprised if there is a lot of this kind of stupid destructiveness after that.

Further, I fear we're going to see this type of thing escalate the closer we get o election day. I'm actually quite concerned about it, especially if someone starts trying to tell T the truth about polls, hid election chances, and/or his diminishing mental capabilities. That's when we might see those Constitutional Sheriffs rip into action... By themselves or "deputized" magats. I worry about an "if we can't have it, we'll burn it all down" attitude. Add that to the election and voter challenges going on presently, and many of us may have to fight to vote. I do wish it was December already (sigh).

These vermin are terrorists. There will be no "civil war". Just home-grown terrorism.

I would think security cameras would be abundant anywhere near their facilities. I mean, it's happened before so what the hell? I believe they don't wanna catch any Trumpers in the act. They'll just take the loss and let them vent off their steam.

I've been pondering Russia, China, US, Britain--now and historically.

With a bit of Hobbes, Locke, Tocqueville and Federalist Papers tossed in as the solvents.

It's undoubtedly not novel and long since derided as horribly non-progressive, but it strikes me that the Founding Fathers' views that the Constitution was written for a virtuous people (see--not novel, long since derided!) hit the nail on the head. You don't need an onerous set of laws, regulations, government intrusion and control, if societal norms are inculcated in the young and most abide by them and enforce them among themselves. People rule themselves, they don't need much outsider "imperial" rule or oppression. Corruption's kept in self-check. Bad acts are penalized "in-house" by family and friends or the local community. But if people can't rule themselves--the only constraints are from outside--then you really need an outside power to maintain order.

You self-govern as a person and family, you can self-govern lightly as a country. You don't, you can't. Then you need Xi-men like Putin.

....cameras are everywhere. Ring cameras, street cameras. I'm concerned that these crazies are shutting down power that may be a hazard to the folks living there. Only a RW'er these days would carry out an act like that. Some clown doing that can spend 10 years in the Federal Pen and read treatises on Democracy.

In rural areas, the main lines are stepped down at each residence. Therefore, each residence has a transformer. That's a lot of transformers. Can't watch them all.
