Putin warns South Korea against arming Ukraine
5 hours ago
By Kelly Ng, BBC News
Vladimir Putin has warned South Korea it would be making "a big mistake" if it arms Ukraine in the war against Russia. ... His comments come after Seoul said it was considering such a possibility, in response to Russia and North Korea's new pact to help each other in the event of "aggression" against either country.
Moscow "will... [make] decisions which are unlikely to please the current leadership of South Korea" if Seoul decides to supply arms to Kyiv, Mr Putin told reporters on Thursday.
The Russian leader was speaking in Vietnam, shortly after a lavish visit to Pyongyang where he signed a mutual defence agreement with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. ... Mr Putin also warned that Moscow is willing to arm Pyongyang if the US and its allies continue supplying Ukraine with weapons.
"Those who supply these weapons believe that they are not at war with us. I said, including in Pyongyang, that we then reserve the right to supply weapons to other regions of the world," Mr Putin said.

(18,059 posts)He's claiming that its Ukraine's war against Russia, the part he left out is that he started the war so it would be Russia's war against Ukraine.
I'm not too worried about what Russia can do to S. Korea, S. Korea has a well trained, well equipped military.
Hell, Russia can't even defeat Ukraine.

What years was he in VN if you don't mind my asking?"
I might've met him, the Corps isn't exactly huge and in my 35 years as a Marine, I probably came across him, although, after all these years, memories begin to fade.
Peace out
Daniel.

(71,904 posts)... I remember having gotten caught on the grinder at Groton getting to class and having to stand through six or seven national anthems at the Raising of the Colors and being late to my section. Of all of the nations we gave diesel boats to and trained, the South Koreans were the only ones to have all their shit in one sock. Their sailors were impressive and I heard from Marines that the RoKs were as tough as group as anyone and there were some other tough ally troops in the shit with them, like the Aussies.

(18,059 posts)around, they didn't exactly play by western standards.
I talked to other US Marines and they pretty much say the same thing, they wouldn't want to go up against the RoK Marines, it would be a losing proposition and speaking as a US Marine, that's quite the compliment.

(81,198 posts)Good thing they are on our side.
I just did a google on the RoK in VN, looking at their uniforms,
to see if I recognized them. But looks like US GI's?
Same camo?
MarineCombatEngineer
(18,059 posts)their military pretty much mirrors ours, including their intelligence services.
Their Navy is pretty lethal also and trained by the US Navy.

(81,198 posts)One of the places we were stationed is Okinawa during the VN war and the island was jammed
with US troops, all branches. And sometimes foreign troops.
We were on an AF base, but next to a Navy and Marine base.
They were busy training and the AF kids would get on the bus way to the north of the island
and watch troops train. (We had nothing else to do.)
To this day I remember watching Army/Marine? paratroopers practice jumping out of airplanes into the sugar
cane fields. It was a sight to behold. The entire sky filled with parachutes.
(
We tended to get the army and marines confused, the camos looked similar?
The Navy uniform was distinctive.)
We saw all kinds of troops riding the (off duty) buses, but I don't remember the RoK.
Maybe they didn't come to the island to train, or we just didn't see them.
Or maybe the RoK didn't ride around on the military buses off duty.

(18,059 posts)They're stalworth allies and I am damned glad that they're allies of ours and, IMHO, Putin better watch out pissing of the S. Korean's, they will give Russia a what for.
Irish_Dem
(81,198 posts)Sounds like the VC gave the ROK a very wide berth.
Yes South Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, all allies.
SK very much so.
SK probably doesn't want to aggravate Putin too much for fear he will give
North Korea more nuke capability?
How do you think the ROK and Ukraine armies would get a long if they fought together?
Are they in the same league?
MarineCombatEngineer
(18,059 posts)S. Korean military standards, but giving the Ukrainians' military to adapt to the changing battlefield tactics, I would speculate that US and S. Korean training has contributed to recent Ukrainian advances.
I would speculate that the SK military is a big factor in those advances.
Irish_Dem
(81,198 posts)Maybe I have that wrong.
Oh I would love to be a fly on the wall watching ROK/US train Ukrainian soldiers.
All being done in secret of course.
I assume the US has some "advisors" in Ukraine, if for no other reason
than to make sure all the money is going where it is supposed to go.
Yes Ukraine's adaptability on the battlefield and ability to find
low cost ways to fight the way is incredible. As is their bravery, courage and determination.

(9,446 posts)Knew a US Army officer who was assigned to ROK as a liaison in Korea. Said the discipline in the ROK army was INTENSE!! Physically, too. NCO wore white gloves.
I told my story to an Annapolis grad. He said while coming into port in S.K. they passed a ROK navy ship with the entire crew on deck to watch as a senior petty officer was beating the Holy crap out of some seaman! Who didn't dare resist! Told a fellow officer they should have the crew of their ship all on deck to watch it!

(77,303 posts)Fuck off. S. Korea makes some really good artillery and it will ruin any Russians
day in Ukraine. And that artillery will drop 3 to 5 rounds of high explosives on target
from miles away and then scoot on down the road in under 2 minutes.
When are the Russians going to stop Vlad from killing the people of Russia and stealing
the peoples money.

(9,446 posts)That's a threat. And blackmail.
But that begs the question: "With what, Vlad?"
Your military - and not just the Russian army! - is short of EVERYTHING! To include troops.
You are also running out of tanks, helicopters, and artillery (thus, your hat-in-hand visit to N. Korea.)
Your nuclear submarine that just left Cuba is 'falling apart' with its soundproofing panels falling off.
And remind me again how many Russia ships you lost in the Black Sea to home-made Ukrainian drones?
So many ships destroyed or damaged their movements are restricted or they are confined to port?
Tell me how many of your top-of-the-line T-90 tanks and upgraded T-80 tanks have been taken out by US-supplied 40-year old Bradleys.
Take you threat and shove it up Trump's ass.

(77,303 posts)Good for up close and fun times. Blow the top right off of a Russian tank. And dont
forget the shaped charges that turn the Russian tanks into flaming piles of dead people
and ruined equipment.
Please Ivan drive that tank down a road or across a farm field in Ukraine and find out what
happens.

(1,609 posts)Seriously, your idiot threats are boring and no one takes Russia seriously anymore. You've lost more than two dozen ships -including a submarine!- to a nation with no navy. Your army sucks. The only thing it has going for it is the huge number of untrained people at Ukraine. And that isn't really working out. Your air force has to shoot from the safety of Russia and then run back to base (where Ukrainian drones will take them out at their leisure). There's little reason to believe that any but a small portion of your nukes even work as anything but dirty bombs at this point.
Ya got nothing, Vlad. Shut and get your shine box.
