Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke is dismissing concerns about President Bidens age, saying even though hes more than a decade older than the commander in chief, hes still got all [his] marbles.
Im old enough to be his father, the Dick Van Dyke Show and Mary Poppins star said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporters Awards Chatter podcast, released Thursday, when asked if criticism of the 81-year-old presidents age was legitimate. Ive got all my marbles, the 98-year-old Van Dyke said. So Im not worried about it.
A Gallup poll released Thursday found that 59 percent of respondents said they were very concerned with Bidens age, compared to 18 percent for former President Trump, whos 78. Van Dyke, who supported Sen. Bernie Sanderss (I-Vt.) 2016 and 2020 White House bids, said hes backing Biden ahead of November.
I met Joe Biden. And I said, You know, I used to be as tall as you are. And he said, I used to have hair like you. I liked him right away, Van Dyke said with a laugh.

(4,848 posts)It felt like 75% of the US population was happy to let anyone older than 65 rot in isolation so as not to inconvenience themselves. Its no surprise that Bidens age continues to be an issue. The surprise is that so many are willing to turn a blind eye to a man mimicking the likes of Hitler and threatening to harm Democrats win or lose 2024!

(114,650 posts)except for milestones like puberty and menopause, which tend to happen during fairly fixed calendar ages.
I've known people who were ancient by their late 50s and didn't live much longer than that. I've also known people who were spry and sharp through their 80s, still sharp but slowing down in their 90s and low 100s.
I don't know if Biden will make it completely through a second term, but I do know he's capable of doing the job now. I also know Harris is ready to step in should he need to r4esign due to health issues. There are no guarantees for any of us, that's why we have a line of succession in place.
I do know that TFG's calendar age is lower but he is farther along in the aging process, both physically and mentally. He is not capable of doing the job, his VP is likely to be a true horror,, and any staff he tries to get past the Senate will be chosen for ass kissing, not competence.
The age "controversy" is a ginned up thing by media moguls who refuse to face facts because they're obsessed with not paying taxes.
Yes, even worse DT had/has a bit of a problem with cocaine. Not sure that helps with mental processing at any age.

(114,650 posts)and people around me got overly bright and voluble, the usually inarticulate getting very chatty. It's a pity the shit only lasted such a short period, it actually improved some shy people.
I say that as someone who didn't get the point of the stuff, 20 minutes of feeling like an 8 year old on Xmas Eve followed by 3 days of having one's sinuses feel like they were stuffed with rusty Brillo pads. Ugh. Y'all can have my share.
I'd much rather deal with people who are coked up than drunks. Unfortunately, most cokeheads did both.
I don't think TFG is coked up these days. I just think he's a blustering blowhard who's lost the ;plot.

(785 posts)Kings throughout history have aged older and yet countries stand behind them. In America we're too busy looking at the age of a President when we have a WHOLE STAFF that is behind him. A female VP for example....

(2,199 posts)My Dad was a wheat field farming kid that was drafted during the Korean War. As a working man, He has proudly told me that he has never voted for a republican in his life. I will miss him dearly when he passes. At his age, I would vote for him in a heartbeat. At 94, my Dad is driving to Colorado with my Mom to enjoy the mountains. He is something to behold.

(31,956 posts)If you keep or have more telomeres at the end of each of that DNA strands in your cells... you simply don't age as quickly as other people.
DNA controls cell replication... out entire bodies replace every cell within 7 to 10 years or faster with things like skin cells... every last cell. As they replicate, the DNA is used to make the new cell... and what protects the DNA is the telomere at each end. Lose the telomere and the DNA is "lost" ( or corrupted ). If you are in computer science, the telomeres are the packet checksums in TCP... or the telomere is the twisty thing at the end of a loaf of bread... lose it and the bread goes stale.
Some people age much faster than others... natural selection doesn't come into play as much because we all tend to have children long before we die of "bad telomeres"... so we have not evolved to have long life spans. Except there are some populations ( maybe by accident ) which tend to live much longer than others ( I believe certain indigenous people in Pakistan have this trait ).
Of course environmental and lifestyle choices that effect our aging processes too.
So I should have said "It's all about the Telomeres and diet and lifestyle". Dick van Dyke has stayed active his entire life. His brother Jerry ( another fine actor who almost never got a decent role to play until "Coach" ) lived until age 86.

(198 posts)That's why presidential nominees have running mates. If Biden ever can't do his job, there is a young VP right there.

(31,454 posts)with some of these folk. Does anyone remember the 2012 election? They did the same thing to Obama in his first debate against Romney. The Hair On Fire Brigade was out in force, telling us just how doomed we were, and they're at it again. My advice? Don't give them the oxygen they so desparately seek.

It's a shame we can't call a troll a troll, but it's best to keep insults to a minimum, and let MIRT take out the trash.
