Clyburn suggests there should be more 'fact checking' in next debate

Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) suggested that there should be more live fact-checking during the next presidential debate after CNN was criticized for the lack of it last week.
Clyburn said he doesnt know whether there should be a second debate after President Bidens poor debate showing on Thursday night on CNNs State of the Union. While speaking to CNNs Dana Bash, who moderated last weeks debate, he suggested that there was not enough live fact-checking during the debate.
I think that Joe Biden will do well with the debate. I think it all depends upon what the rules are. I dont like the debate when nobody will do any fact checking. You just say what you want to say. You know its a lie. The guy told 30 some odd lies and nobody checked him on it. Instead that was up to Joe Biden to do, he told Bash.
If I asked you a question, and you lied to me with the answer, I would have followed up and give you what the facts are and see what your reaction to that will be. So that to me was not the way to plan the debate. And whoever did that and agreed to that really should think about what theyre doing, he added.

(9,459 posts)Imagine the parade we would all have if Trump had crapped out and decided to skip the 2nd debate.
Fact checking ? ..it all depends upon what the rules are?
Cmon.

(2,851 posts)I was appalled that they just sat there and let TSF ramble and meander through the windmills of his fabulist mind throughout the duration of the process. He was allowed to spew lies and bullshit for 90 minutes without being checked by either one of the bobblehead mods.

(13,480 posts)Two minutes to present complex policies, one minute to counter and another minute to counter the counter. It just begs for confusion and in Trumps case easy lies that take more than a minute to explain why its a lie.
Every candidate should have some major policy positions that affect the American people. Give candidates time to explain what they are and how they benefit real people, instead of asking 20-30 questions that are often gotcha questions. And moderators need to ask follow-up questions. Trump says he will deport all undocumented people. Millions of them work in our food supply chain. Mr. Trump, how will you prevent our food supply chain from collapsing if the majority of its workers are deported? He would probably say something stupid about those jobs being good black jobs!
At this point, instead of a second debate, I would rather see a sit-down interview with each candidate with interviewers who know how to push back effectively. Giving Trump a stage for continuous lies does nothing to help voters.

(17,377 posts)when he didn't answer the question (which was always), Joe would have shined. The format was totally foreign to me, let alone Joe who has participated in literally hundreds of debates throughout his career that looked and behaved nothing like this CNN one. No wonder Joe got tripped up. The debate format itself was a fiasco!

(1,121 posts)how about a red or green fact-checking light bulb at the lectern, that the audience can see? Red=lie; green=truth.
If they had something like that in place for "debate" 1, Trumps lectern would have gone up in flames in the first 5 minutes.

(23,606 posts). . .from that fiasco of a "town hall" with Trump back in May 2023.
People warned them back then that there was no way one can "fact-check" Trump in real time because he spews a "volcano of bullshit" and a "firehose of fuckery" (the first item was said by former Capitol police officer Michael Fanone, btw)
Some folks never learn.

(536 posts)It's the job of the debators to call out misinformation by the other, and for the audience to weigh both sides. Biden just has to push back harder on Trump.

(6,115 posts)Biden's guys pushed for the rules of this debate and got them approved. The fact that they didn't understand that the format made it impossible to respond to the firehose of lies is their fault. The fact that his debate prep didn't account for the limited time format is an utter failure.
Biden needs better aides than this for his campaign. If he stays in the race I hope there's a shakeup.
